Card error
Don't quite get what the problem is here, but maybe try this:
1) Charge your battery before trying again.
2) Remember it's important to reformat your card (see manual if you don't know how to do this) after you transfer pictures to your computer. Check the pictures are transferred and back them up before formatting, as this erases your card. Formatting must be done in the camera, not in the computer!
Good luck! :)
XD card Error
Try formating the card in the Camera twice.

First: thank you, for suggesting battery terminals. It was failing to power on intermittently for some time; the problem became more-and-more frequent until it would not come on at all. Cleaning the terminals saved my camera!
Second: for others, let me suggest plain old pencil erasers as a good way to clean electrical contacts (something I learned from HO model railroads as a kid). A vigorous rub with the brand new eraser on the end of a pencil cleaned the battery contacts inside the camera.

Take no more pics until you've recovered your photos, take the card out of the camera. This is to reduce the chance of you overwriting some of your "lost" photos. There are many good freeware photo recovery software options that may help you recover your photos.
This article reviews and outlines several of the better ones.

Lost Disc cover I have a C 350 and have lost the disc's box with the serial number and cannot download program for Camedia 4.1. It will not download without it. What can I do?
ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO A COMPUTER If your photos and videos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos and to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.
Olympus 2G xd M card with pictures - error message "clean card" or format
Just had the same issue today. The Olympus Helpdesk told me that the fact I had printed one of the picture from the Xd card in directly inserting the card in the printer slot for Xd created the problem....
The guy from the Helpdesk strongly recommended to transfer the pictures from the camera to the computer exclusively using the USB cable of the camera.
In the end I have saved all my 505 pictures in using the Smart Recovery from PC Inspector but why the hell this problem only happens with Xd cards?
