VR550 : no signs of life at all after period of absence

Gone away twice last summer, unplugging the VR, upon returning re-plugged in but no signs of life at all. I checked the fuses ( plug & power PC board ) - both OK. The switches seem to be also clicking away happily. The machine has been initially commissioned a few years ago without any problems, and been used intermittently ever since. Is this a throwaway ?

SOURCE: problem

sounds like the capacitor on the start up voltage to the drive ic in the power supply has dried up.If you never unplugged vcr before you wouldnt have noticed problem. Now since unplugged cant start up properly. It is the capacitor nearest the ic in the psu can.If you know anyone handy at electronics should be an easy job for them.

Your first bet is to remove the battery and hold down the power button for 10 seconds, then replace the battery and try to turn it on.

Sorry I'm not more familiar with the model of phone you're talking about but this has worked for my old PDA's when they won't power-cycle correctly.

Can't record

Unplug the VCR overnight, reset the clock and try the timer again. if that does not work, there is a fault in the microprocessor and you would need to get a new VCR I'm afraid, as the repair would cost you twice what a new VCR would. Good Luck

Playback sound

Unit might be picking up 60 cycle hum or other electromagnetic field. Is VCR sitting on/under another piece of electronic equipment? If so, it could pick up such from the power supply circuitry of that other device. Try moving the VCR away from other equipment and see if the unwanted sound disappears.
