Electronic Power Steering

Went out the other day while the wife was driving. I drove it to work on Monday and it worked fine, but quit working when I left work to go home. Same thing on Tuesday. This morning, it worked 3/4 of the way to work and went out. The common factor here is when it was cold enough to have frost on the windows, the power steering worked fine, but once it warmed up (outside, not the car temp) it quit working.
I know about the bulletin on the 2004 Malibus and the Power Steering sensor. I never got a letter about this, but found out about it when this first started last week. I think I'm out of luck since the program ended two years ago AND I'm over 100,000 miles on the car.
The real question is why does the temperature affect when the Power Steering works or doesn't work?

Thanks. I'll try and see what happens. But my main question still remains.....If anyone out there knows what the real deal with this problem is, I would really like to know why the temperature affects it the way it does. If it's a mechanical, or even electrical, problem like I keep reading about, why on earth does it work when it's cold? One would think that once it failed it would stay failed...........

My 1996 ford bronco wont start. My wife drove home from work parked over the weekend and was going to work on monday and it wont start it turns over fine and its getting spark but idont hear the fuel pump....

i would start simple on this and check the fuel pump relay first. there not that expensive you can try to replace if you cant find specs to test it. if that does not work then i would say its your fuel pump that went out.

Power steering light came on while driving.....changed the fuse....it drove fine...next day....power steering light came on again while driving....let the car sit overnight....working fine now....its been...

This is a known problem with the power steering which will probably require replacement of the power steering motor. The HHR uses an electric 12V DC motor to provide the power steering force, and they have started failing.

GM is recalling the Cobalt and other vehicles for this issue, but not yet the HHR. If you are out of warranty, you will probably be personally responsible for the cost of diagnostics and replacement.

You will probably need to contact your dealer unless you are able to replace the motor yourself. Sorry.

Mountaineer shuts off

it might be a blockage in your fuel lines, this will sometimes make your car go into failsafe, because it knows there is gas in the car but a limited amount reaches the carbarettor, this is also why it will sometimes stop while trying to "rapidly" accelarate ( from a red light )
