Laptop says excellent connection - not able to access internet
I have installed the linksys router successfully on the desk top. The laptop says that i have excellent connection but when i try to access the internet i have no connection. What am I doing wrong
Re: laptop says excellent connection - not able to access...
Connect laptop to router using lan cable. check internet connection. Should be ok. Only then enable wireless using same WLAN protocol you use on Router: WEP or WPA with same encryption key TKIP or AES. Be sure no access list enabled on Router or add Laptop MAC address to access list.

You need to configure the Linksys with the wireless settings, ie. the SSID and encryption. then you need to configure the wireless card in laptop with these router's wireless settings so it can connect with the wireless router. Open a browser on your computer and type in the Linksys configuration URL. http://192.168.1.1 The default login = admin The default PW = admin then go to the wireless section and configure the SSID and encryption. I suggest you use WPA or WPA2 these are much stronger encryption than the older WEP encrtption.
no.. and chances you're not even doing what you describe.. she's likely simply accessing the internet through your linksys router, she probably does it wirelessly while your desktop may be wired to the router. the router is to share the internet connectivity so you're not going to be charge for having her connecting to the router. something you may want to keep in mind is that if you your stepdaughter did not require a key code /password to access internet anyone that is close enough to your house could to the same without your authorization. so configure some security on your router. your router's manual should let you know in details how to do it! if you don't know where your manual is, post back with your model number and revision (at the bottom of the router) and we'll help out find the the manual.
Typically, the upgrade is done by pointing your web browser at the IP address of the Linksys router. Linksys should provide specific instructions at the site above.
Desk top to internet is OK. How about Destop through Router connection to Internet OK? Assuming you want to connect wireless from Lap top to Network, need to configure correctly for wireless in Router. If you connect Lap top to router by wire and it didn't work that mean your router is bad.
click on Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connections -> Properties -> In the box in the middle scroll to and click on "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" -> Click Properties -> Make sure "Obtain an IP Address Automaticaly" is Ticked -> make sure "obtain dns address automatically" is Ticked. -> ok -> click ok
See if you can connect
Click on Start -> Run -> Type CMD and hit enter. a command box will open. type in IPCONFIG/ALL
Please copy down the following numbers --- IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway DNS Servers
Please make sure you copy them correctly and post them here.
You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.
1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.
Try resetting your IP address: The laptop may be trying to use the IP address from the old router.
1) Click Start (assuming Windows 2000, XP, or Vista) 2) Click Run 3) Type in CMD This will take you to a black command box 4) Type in: ipconfig/release The chart should show your IP address as 0.0.0.0 Once this has happened, proceed to step 5 5) Type in: ipconfig/renew You should now see a new IP address listed.
Also note that you need to set up your network key (assuming that you are using one) on both the router and laptop. Make sure that your router is set up to perform as DHCP server.
The network key is stored in the router, and your manual will tell you how to access it. If you don't have access to the router's web page, you'll need to reset the router and start over.
