Ill try to help, in this cases..maybe your optic DVD rom cables may have weak or poor. Its usually common at DVD or cd rom.

Thanks for the details you have mentioned. The steps you have taken are correct and if the System/ hardware is ok, it should boot from CD Drive. Whenever i have faced such an issue, i always started afresh to check each hardware (CD, DVD, ROM, Hard Disk, Cables, Connections etc) and most of the times the issue was optical drive or CD/DVDs.

So, I recommend that make sure that the CD/DVD ROM is functioning properly. When the system is set to boot from CD/DVD, it must try to read CD/DVD after power on. It is indicated by spinning of the optical drive and blinking CD ROM LED. If there is a bootable CD in the drive, it should boot. You may try to boot the system through DOS bootable CD. Also, if you still have the OS on your system, you may check the CD ROM through windows.

first you should go into the bios and set the boot order to make the CD drive first. On that same screen you need to make sure that the CD drive has been enables as a boot device. If you haven't already tried it make sue the disk you are using is clean and actually a bootable disk.

I had similar problem on a Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop, I simply had to reconnect DVD drive. It usually loosing it's connection with motherboard and drive is visible in My Computer but it doesn't recognize any discs. If reconnection does not solve your issue you may try to update your DVD firmware and if it won't help replace DVD drive. Good Luck!

It's likely a laser alignment problem inwhich you will need to replace the hardware. However, I had a similar problem once with a notebook and found out that a tiny bread crumb was near the spindal making the cd in the drive off balance. Check liberally for any debris. Good luck!

As you say it is old. The Cd drive laser is probably burned out- but if you can get hold of a CD driver cleaner disk it may help As for the display- nothing to be done there I feel, you could be in an endless loop of paying for inefectual parts- far better to start afresh
