Why won't my Garmin Nuvi 780 charge?

My Nuvi 780 will not charge with the car charger. It uses the larger end and not a USB end. When you plug in any USB charger, it acts like it's plugged into a PC for updates and the navigation won't work. It does charge, but it is extremely slow and the charge is very short lived. I can't seem to find a charger for it. Any suggestions?

A couple part answer here. The USB pin out for the Garmin is strange. If it goes into PC mode, then the cable is got the wrong pin out for the unit. Try different cables until one works.

If you can get a full charge on the unit and the battery does not provide at least an hour + of battery use, then the battery needs to be replaced. Amazon sells replacement battery kits with instructions. You just have to make sure you order the right one.

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi acts like its plugged to a computer in the car

This is the problem with the Nuvi 2xx series... the charging port connector on the rear is weak and eventually the connections fail. It does not have a quick disconnect port like the Nuvi 3xx, 6xx or 7xx series.

The connector has to be either resoldered or replaced. The bad connections are whats causing the problem, making your Nuvi think its connected to a PC rather than a true charging power source.

If the device does not power on it could be a result of a extremely low battery. Please ensure that the device is receiving a charge while it is connected to the vehicle power cable. If the battery is receiving power from the vehicle power cable then the battery icon (located next to the time) would disappear from the Main Menu.
If the unit does not power on while attached to the vehicle power cable please follow steps from below to perform a soft reset:

  1. Connect the device to an external power source1
  2. Slide and hold the power key to the on position for 15 seconds
The device should power on.

Notes:
  1. Preferably the vehicle power cable or a USB cable from a computer
  2. Some of the older Nuvi 200 series will have a reset button on the bottom of the device. It can be found on the bottom of the device on the same sticker that the serial number is printed on.
  3. Then Make

After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect your compatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your computer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start", "Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater"
REMEMBER: It takes hours to do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.

Make sure you have the rite charger. Garmin will only work with a garmin charger. You may have accidently picked up a blackberry charger or something. Hope this helps

SOURCE: garmin nuvi 260w is not charging with car charger

You have a short in the wire that runs to your unit. Other than holding the wire in the exact location until your charge is complete you would be better off replacing the charging cord. They should be available at your local shop for around $19-$29.00.

Will not turn on

Hi Larry -

Your Nuvi 765T should light up when you connect it to your computer's USB port. If it doesn't, there may be a problem with the USB port. Try connecting to the other USB ports on the computer (or a different computer - such as one at work, etc.) if needed. This will help rule out a defective USB port on the computer. You can also connect to a USB charger for another device that you may have instead. It may not charge with another product's USB charger if it provides a very low power output though. The auto plug will not charge the Nuvi when it gets into this condition. Even if it does not light up, leave it plugged into the USB charger / or port over night.

Check the GTM20 traffic receiver plug. It has two LEDs on the body. The one closest to the power cord end is the Traffic Reception Status light and the the one closest to the plug end is the Power light. If either of these lights is on when connected to the Nuvi, the fuse is good. If not not, you may need to change out the fuse in the FM traffic receiver plug. The plug powers both the traffic reciever and Nuvi. Carefully spin off the bright metal ring to disassemble the end to access the fuse. Replace if it is open / blown. If you need replacement parts, they can be purchased from Amazon for about $6.

After charging over night via charger or USB port, disconnect the nuvi from the power / USB cord and turn on by sliding AND holding the power switch in place to turn it on. Keep it held in position for 10 - 15 seconds before letting it slide back. During this time, the Nuvi should start up.

If it will not power up, the battery may be unable to accept a charge. You can replace the battery yourself, but it requires a steady hand, jewelers tools, good eye sight and patience from people selling parts to do this on eBay for as little as $6. Here's a link to those auctions.

If you'd prefer not to do the work yourself, a second option would be to let Garmin handle the "repair". Your 765T is likely out of warranty, and garmin offers a "flat rate repair" fee of $99. If you opt to do this, you will send your 765T to garmin and they will send you a different 765T that has been factory refurbished; complete with the most recent maps available already installed and a gaurantee good for 90 days. Not a bad deal when you consider the cost of upgrading just the maps one time on the 765T. You can start the process on garmin's site, linked here. I have used this service myself and was quite happy with it.

I hope this helps & good luck!

My garmin 780 doesn't operate with the car charger plugged in. goes to a scenery photo that has a small picture of it plugged in to a computer at the bottom of the screen, and does not load. is that...

hi danielktx, its doing that because it thinks the charger is the USB cable and connected to the computer...either you have the wrong charger (is it factory or after market) or the charger it self is faulty.

I dont know how to charge my GARMIN nuvi 1200 with the usb cable

There are 3 ways to charge your garmin nuvi 1200 as follows;
  1. Connect your satnav to a computer with the mini USB cable. Plug the narrow end into the satnav, where the power cable goes, and the other end into the USB port of your computer. Both computer and satnav must be turned on. It will take about 8 hours to charge like this.
  2. Connect your satnav to your car charger and plug the charger into the cigarette lighter socket of your car. It will take about 4 hours to charge.
  3. You can get an optional mains charger which also takes 4 hours to charge the satnav.

I was given a Garmin Nuvi 1350 for my birthday about nine months ago ...I still haven't used it. I think my husband forgot to pick up an instruction book. Is it possible to email me one, and also list...

There's a manual available in adobe reader format at http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/3130_OwnersManual.pdf
There should have been a car charger with the satnav. It has a plug that goes in the cigarette lighter socket of the car on one end and the other end has a mini USB plug that goes in the back of the satnav. Charging with this charger takes about 4 hours though it can be charged while using the satnav. For the first charge you should leave it on until it's fully charged.

There should also be a mini USB lead with the satnav that can be used to connect it to a computer. Connecting it to a computer also charges it though this method takes about 8 hours.

Mains chargers can be bought seperately from shops which sell garmin satnavs.

Garmin nuvi won't turn on

folks, the garmins have an on-board battery that needs to be powered up (at least occasionally) via the usb port - like from your computer. just using the dc car power cord does nothing for this battery. i've had this exact same problem on both my 760 and 780 nuvi units. fixed it using the usb charge. seems to run down differently for all the various nuvi models. my regular charge will hold for 7 hours on my old 660, my 760 and 780 work about 5 hours. my 'power up' failed on the 660 after 10 months with no internal battery charge, but the 7xx models only took about 5-6 months to 'fail.' hope this helps. jack b :-) in midland, tx usa
