Display lights up at start up but fades out before Windows OS is loaded
Either the lcd screen or video card has a problem. Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely
see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.
Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be
any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga
cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your
video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot
without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN
(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct
key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will
normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.
If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works,
then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light
and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is
bad.
Try the steps about seeing if an external monitor displays ok or the same way. If it displays the same way it's your video card.
In fact before I purchased another motherboard I would take the laptop apart and pull the mother board out to reflow the video card.
When you get the motherboard out, wrap some aluminum foil all around the the motherboard, but leave the video card exposed. Take a blow dryer (hair dryer) and set it on high heat and use a sweeping motion all over and around the video card for about 1 minute. Then take a pencil with an eraser on it, and push all around the edges and in the middle of the video card with the eraser end to apply pressure to reseat the video card. Repeat this step about two more times, then remove the foil, let the motherboard cool of, then put it back in the laptop and try rebooting. I've done this process lots of times and it works most times.

SOURCE: MY ACER ASPIRE 9805 will not boot past the ACER DISplay
Sounds like the mother board,or processor is bad
SOURCE: can Acer aspire 5738 support Windows XP os?
Yes you can, good choice. one thing the comment above me didnt mentioned was that you need to change the settings on your disk in BIOS to native IDE and not sata.(if sata the windows installation doesent find your DISKS.) good luck

@Milton Carroll - I tried all of your suggestions prior to posting my question. Nothing works. An laptop LCD display repair and replacement said that this model Acer Aspire 7540 does not have an LCD Inverter and that I may have to change the motherboard since the video card is built in. He said the LCD may be fine because it would not light up fully and then just fade out to horizontal lines.
Any suggestions on motherboard tests I can do before spending money on a replacement? I did reseat and swap out RAM as well as the heat sync - each with no different outcome. Any suggestions are welcome! Thnx
My motherboard is a Hannstar J E89382 0947-21-21.
