I'm trying to fix this problem, with Windows 7 (I hate Vista!)
and i'm looking for a suitable driver.
If I'll find it, I'll post the solution (I hope)

    Hi
    I'm here again
Just this very day I've fixed this trouble, under windows 7 rtm 32 bit , by means of an 'escamotage' and now my dear and old scanjet 4400c is perfectly working!
Before of all you've todownload this driver and unzip into a folder

    http://rapidshare.com/files/270986681/He...

Then  you've to open (fromControl Panel) device manager (I've an italian OS, because I'm austro-italian  :  it's Gestione dispositivi...
You'll see a conflict or an unknown device instead of scanjet 4400c;  wel, l You have to click on update driver (aggiorna driver, in Italian)
and look for the inf file into the folder of 'my' driver.
In the meantime it's necessary keeping the device manager under control, 'cause , at a certain point, you'll see that this driver is installed, without any yellow question mark, Well, now you've to shut off the  scanner install  windows, but , in order to do this, you
have to  click on task manager and kill this windows, otherwise the installation goes on and your scanner will be not working!
Reboot and after  check , in device manager, if your driver is always good and with no conflict.
At this point it's necessary installing your scanner software
    To do this I've used
the file sj659.exe from HP and , using the free software 7Zip (you'll find it online) I've unzipped this exe file into a folder.
Then I've cliccked(right)   on properties -compatibility of the executabe  and checked the box (compatibility for xp Sp3) ..and apply .
    Install the soft and reboot
When windows is 'ready' You'll look for the program HP PRECISION SCAN PRO and  right click on property-compatibility , in order to check the box on compatibility for xp SP3, apply and execute.
In this way my scanner is live again:
    The trick is stopping
, immediately after driver installation and install and execute in compatibility with xp sp3!
I'hope this is working  also for you
IIf you wish, I herewith enclose also my italian documentation about this. I'd no yet  time to translate into English and German

    Hi

I've re-uploaded my driver, on rapidshare again

    http://rapidshare.com/files/283126074/He...
This driver is working for me, however you can use another xp driver for this device: the most important thing is ..stopping installation of HP software(in compatible modality) as soon as driver is configured! Rebooting , installing hp software again (compatible modality) and execute (compatibility xp sp3)
In this way, I can employ my scanner again...
    Regards
    Donald

Drivers HP scanjet 4400c for windows 7

This worked for me:
Do NOT connect scanner before these first few steps
1. Download & save win xp drivers from HP website: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=28447&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=28441&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228
The 63.4mb file is the only one you'll need
2. Right-click on the saved file and go to its properties. Under the compatibility tab, set the file to run with win xp service pack 3. Apply changes and close properties dialogue.
3. Right click on the same file and choose 'run as administrator'. Accept any windows prompts that may appear and let the program & drivers install.
4. Once the software has finished installing, connect the scanner to your computer (via USB) and turn the scanner on.
5. Restart the computer without unplugging or turning the scanner off.
6. Your scanner should now work fine with the HP Precisionscan Pro utility.

Hp scanjet 4570c + windows 7

Download Windows Vista version (32 bit or 64 bit) depending on your Windows 7/8.0/8.1 (32 bit or 64 bit) from: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=77368&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
Then, extract the file that you download "setup_basic_4500_500.exe" using WinRAR to Desktop.
Next, go to Control Panel then Device Manager. You will see the scanner "hp" under Other devices with error. Right click on it then select update driver software. Select Browse my computer for driver software. Click Browse and point it to the folder on your desktop that contains extracted files. You can make sure to check on include subfolders.
That will install the driver perfectly fine under windows 8.1 in my case 64 bit.

Hi i need driver Vista or Win 7 for scanjet 4400c .Thanks

Hewlett Packard does not support this product with the Windows Vista or Windows 7 OS. However, there has been an unsupported driver floating around the net claiming compatibility.

Win vista doesn't accept hp scanjet 4400c downloaded driver

Hi there from Germany - English isn't the best but got the same problem solved so give it a try:

- first connect scanner to computer without having the drivers already installed
- next computer claims driver cd put in yours from XP or select downloaded XP-driver
- reboot
- try if scanner works - sometimes they do already
- if not head over to System management or system control what it's called in english
- choose add device and choose scanner
- now Windows tries to install a xerox-driver - allow this
- reboot
- and now it should work - if not sue hp! (But buttons for direct printing etc. might not be working anymore - except via the software itself - no more via the buttons

Hope I could help
