After inserting a brand new color cartridge I get an error message to remove cartridge and reinsert. I've made sure the tape is off. Sometimes a second message tells me the cartridge is not compatible with this printer. It is the exact same cartridge from Staples. Is there something I can try without first going to a repairman. Its a broken spring clip on the side of the ink cartridge.

hp is supposed to give you a brand new printer for free.
Are you sure it's a genuine HP cartridge? Sometimes remanufactured cartridges aren't recognized by the printers. HP and others make them so that they have a chip inside that ensures only new genuine cartridges can be used. Try a new HP and see if that solves the problem. If you've already tried that one, then make sure the contacts in the printer are clean. If you still have a problem, then I'd say try a new printer!

I am having the same problem. I just put a new color cartridge in my HP OfficeJet 7410 Printer and it's giving me an error message. Can you help us?
This was not a solution- it was clearly identified that the cartridge is a HP cartridge. I have the same problem... I bought two separate HP cartridges from Sam's Club for $$$ and neither of them work. Not very good publicity for HP.
