If you are on a PC the most common reason for iTunes not recognising is because of driver corruption. The easiest way to resolve this is to download the very latest version of it from the Apple site and reinstalling it. If that doesnt work, reset the device by holding down Menu and Select until the Apple logo appears then hold down Select and Play together until the display reads 'OK to Disconnect'. Now connect it to your PC. iTunes should now recognise it and you should click the 'restore' button on the ipod main page of iTunes.
For it to recongnize, maybe try: 1: go to control panel 2:add hardware 3:connect your hardware device and click "yes i have connected the hardware" 4:scroll down and select install new hardware device 5:select install hardware that i manually select from a list 6:scroll down to windows portable devices 7:and choose MTP device this should make it so your ipod is now recognised by the computer ---John
does other computers recognise your ipod - menial remedy but try resetting it hold down menu and play buttons till u see apple icon then connect........basic but maybe
try to put the ipod into disk mode, while connected to PC, perform first hard reset by holding select and menu buttons until it restarts, when quickly change to pressing select and play buttons, then it must go into disk mode, will sync with PC and must show in iTunes, perform restore function to reformat the memory
