SOURCE: I just installed a hard drive that I know works

Hi there,

If your HDD is being detected it is good. You did the right thing. There is a possibility that it could be the power supply. It is not providing enough power so the system reboots. If you have 2 HDD's connected try removing one of them. If your pc is connected to a power strip or a surge protector, try connecting it directly to the wall outlet.

Testimonial: "Thatks sooo much, I would never have thought the power supply could have caused this issue...Thanks again!!!!"

How to reformat a laptop using the F9 function?

So my questions would be are you attempting to restore your PC to factory settings? or put a new Operating System on it?

If you are trying to restore to the way you got it, you probably have a recovery partition on your hard drive. If this is the case you are going to want to restore to your recovery hard drive.

If you are trying to put a new operating system on your PC then you will probably want to recover to the non recovery hard drive.

The other option to use the entire hard drive will give you more space on your PC to use, but will wipe out your recovery partition. Hope this helps.

If this isn't making sense try taking a picture of your partitions and posting up here so we can give you better advice.

How do I get my inspiron 5100 back to its original factory settings? I don't care if I loose my documents they are saved on a jump drive

Hi, if you have your Del CD, you can just put this in and select repair or reinstall. If this is not posible, follow the following:
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} To install new version of XP. Insert XP CD into drive, reboot pc pressing ESC button, or delete in some machines. This takes you into BIOS, change your primary boot device to CDrom, save changes and reboot. Select boot from CD once this appears and wait for files to be installed. Select the part of the hard drive you wish to use for your operating system (usually the largest) and select partition this drive. Delete any previous os, and reformat hard drive. (Be aware this removes everything saved on your hard drive, so always back up first) Re boot afterwards and reinstall operating system.
Hope this helps

How to reformat the hard disk of laptop w/o recovery dics?

Reformatting will wipe the drive clean and you will need to reinstall windows, either from the rescue CD or from other media. You may be able to contact Acer and order a replacement CD and install it using the OEM license originally sold with your machine.

If it is merely a problem that programs are not running correctly or that something has corrupted the computer, see if there is a good restore point that you can use from "System Restore." This may allow you to fix the problem and remove the offending program without having to go through the trouble of reformatting and finding the replacement disk.

Finally, since you say that it is Vista, it should be a relatively new machine and it may have a restore partition instead of a rescue disk. If this is the case, there should be a utility in your programs from acer that will allow you to restore the computer to its original form. This will typically reboot the computer and handle the format / reinstall for you. It's possible your friend can't find the disk because he didn't have one.

Just a heads up, typically you can not use a rescue disk from another machine (different make or model) as it will check the hardware configuration before installing the software to make sure it matches the machine the disk shipped with. It is not serial number specific though.

Hope this helps!

Just restart the system holding down f11 key till you hear a beep.

This gives you options for restore. It depends on you to go further.

Hmmm...

Put your hard drive as a slave on another system and delete the desire partition with hard disk tool called Partition Magic or Power Quest. It is Microsoft utility.

This will solve your problem. I am doing same thing when I got problem in any hard drive. It is powerful tool.

SYSTEM RESTORE

You need restore disks or an opperating system to restore any computer to factory condition. Simply put the disk 1 in your dvd/cd drive and go from there. It usually takes 45-60 minutes to do this.

IF you don't have restore disks you can make them on your system (if its running) or you can call the manufacturer and they will send you them for a small fee.
