This is an old motherboard that takes DDR2 memory and has an AM2 socket. If it has been in use, it probably has some bad capacitors by now. You can buy this motherboard new for about $20 plush shipping. Probably the best thing to do with this unless you have an extra AM2 CPU you need to use, is simply to take off the parts and use them in projects. It can use at most 2 gig of RAM.
I recommend you run Lubuntu or some other lightweight OS designed for older computers. Puppy Linux is good too.

A continual beep is usually a sign of the cable being backwards or upside down whatever the case may be

I can't find the audio drivers in a place I would trust, except for XP, and I can't verify this model has a Factory Restore Partition. This appears to be an XP machine, which is no longer supported. I recommend backing up your personal data asap, and plan on moving to a newer machine and Operating System. If the machine won't boot, and you have important files on it, you could purchase a USB Hard Drive Adaptor, pull out the hard drive, and copy any important files to another machine. Good luck.

There are multiple instances when you would want to wipe your PC's memory clean and reset it to the factory defaults.

Called "formatting," it is often the last-ditch effort to restore a PC to functionality.

You will also have to format your PC if it gets crippled by viruses.

Although these instructions are for the Compaq Presario, the steps are essentially the same for all Windows based PCs. Be sure that you want to delete everything this process is irreversible.

Back up any data that you want to keep by saving it to removable media, such as external hard drives, flash drives, DVD-R, etc.

Unplug all peripheral devices, except for the keyboard and mouse.

Turn on the computer. As the computer is starting, repeatedly press F1 to initiate the recovery process.

When the BIOS setup screen appears, press the right arrow key to select "Boot".

Press the down arrow key to select "Boot Device Priority" and press "Enter".

Press the down arrow key to select "CD-ROM" and press "+" to move it to the top of the list.

Open the CD-ROM tray, and insert the system recovery disk.

Exit the BIOS setup by pressing "F10". Be sure to select "Save Changes and Exit".

System recovery should initiate. If it does not, and the PC loads Windows, then you have either failed to set the CD-ROM at the top of the boot priority list or you exited the BIOS setup without saving.

Press "R" to begin the recovery process.

When prompted, select "Full System Recovery".

Restart the computer when the process has completed.

Hope this helps.

Warning: Before Doing the Below Steps don't forget to Unplug the Power cable, monitor cable, keyboard and mouse and any other device connected to your computer.

Do the following Steps.

Step 1: Open the PC case(not your monitir)
Step 2: Locate the CMOS battery on the mother board.

Step3: Remove the Battery and leave it for 4-5min, now put the battery back in its proper place.

After doing above steps now you can connect the power cable, VGA cable, keyboard, mouse etc... and switch on the computer and see if you are able to get display. If still you find the same problem you can try removing RAM from RAM bank and clean it with a brush or a cloth ,both RAM and RAM Bank. Now Put back the RAM and switch on the computer.

Hi martha_prisk ,

This happens when we don't have a backup of our important documents ,
In your case I would recommend you the below steps :-

  1. Analyze if you really want the important documents that you have lost , or you can leave without them , and can start from all over again as if you have just installed a new operating system.
  2. If you feel you can start all over again, then I would say that go ahead , but please make sure that you get an external hard drive , or keep a backup of your important files in multiple sources , in case you have a crash as you have described , at least your important data can be safe.
  3. So even if your system crashes next time , you can be rest assured that your documents , or emails are stored safely in an external source , from which you can copy and get back your documents to your laptop for further work.
  4. If you want your documents back , probably not all but some of them , I suggests you install a data recovery software like recover my files from www.recovermyfiles.com - You can dwonload only a trial version from this link , however it would help you at least check the documents that you can possibly recover.
  5. It's better to be safe than sorry , so start backing up your documents, procedures for setting up email etc , for dealing with a crash next time....:)

Hope this helps...:) your feedback would be appreciated.

There are several ways to speed up your PC by updating various components. Maxing out your memory capacity is one way, getting rid of files you no longer need is another because as your hard drive begins to fill up the system has to sort through all of these files to find what you want to access. You can defragment your hard drive and it will make accessing those files a little faster but maybe not enough for you to notice. You can defrag by clicking on the start menu click on programs and find the accessories folder click here and then again on the system tools folder, here you will find the defragmentation program and upon clicking it, it will let you analysis your hard drive and then defrag it. If you have not maxed out your memory to the 4-gigabyte max, I recommend doing so. In addition, you might consider upgrading your graphics card as well as going with a larger hard drive. All of these suggestions depend on why you need more speed, is it for playing games, movies, pictures? Another thing is that there are programs that constantly are working in the background that can also slow your system down. In the lower right hand corner there are usually icons there, these are programs that are running in the background whether you use them or not. Some programs such as Yahoo Messenger and some others are set to start up with Windows by default when you install them so you may want to disable them from doing so and start them only when you use them.
