The sim card is the portion of the phone that has the instructions for the phone to connect to the mobile/cell phone network.
If the phone has it's sim card removed it cannot connect to the mobile/cell phone network and cannot send or receive data such as calls, SMS messages and data connections.

I try to remove sim card from an apple iphone 3. but the sim card tray only ejects half way . i cannot remove the sim card

only way round this would be to open the iPhone and free the sim card tray from inside. If you don't know how to do this and are not good with electronics your best to get a local iPhone repair person to do it for you as they are very delicate inside and you could easily damage the phone and render it useless just to get the sim card if not done properly

Iphone keeps telling me my SIM card is not recognised. I take it out and then put it back in. It gets recognised initially, but sooner or later (1 min - 1 hour) it will go back to not being recognised....

Try This:
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.

Also, Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe
