Tip & How-To about Canon Eos Cameras
The headache that is "ERROR 99".
The common, works for everything, general fault code.
Doesn't tell you alot in the manual, except consult your nearest dealer...
Fantastic...
So, what does it refer to??
Well, Your camera works to a program and parameters and if one of these goes down and the cause cannot be isolated by the software then a fall back, general, fault code will apply. error 99..
If its a lens issue with communication then try a different lens to isolate the fault. Clean the contacts with lint free cloth. Don't use solvents as the contacts are gold plated and solvents will remove the plating and then you will be in trouble..
Error 99 could mean anything so try to isolate the fault by adjusting settings etc or replacing the batteries (main battery and c-mos battery).
Finding out what, where, why and when is how I start with Error 99 so as much info as possible.
Power loss/drain is a usual common fault. Mainly to do with the flash.
It won't pop up, won't fire etc..
The "Busy" sign is the give away. You press the shutter button and the busy sign flashes (sometimes for ages and then still nothing) Its trying to charge the flash but there is a problem with the circuit or components. Whilst this is happening power is being diverted from other circuits and causing more issues..
There could be thousands of reasons why.
Replacing the flash capacitor has always worked for me. It's a battery with an extremely fast discharge rate and charge rate. It wears out...Quicker than you think.
Don't forget everything made today is from the cheapest manufacturer. made with cheap materials for the disposable, throw away world of today.
