GPX PD708B Portable DVD Player Questions & Answers
Model PD708B works fine with the 120v cord but not
Hi there,
Generally, "disc cannot be read" error relates either to a bad disc, or an optical laser problem.
DVD Optical lasers require sufficient current for optimum performance.
If you are adamant this error only occurs when you are running the car outlet cord, then it must be an issue of an insufficient power supply: either your vehicle is not producing enough current (i.e. amps) through the car socket, or the car adaptor itself is of the incorrect type, or simply not providing the correct output.
If the car adaptor is of the adjustable type, check to ensure it is set to the correct voltage and amperage output.
Good luck...

Hello
Sounds like the headphone jack might be broken, because the sound goes over the headphone jack to the speakers on the unit.
The headphone jack, disconnects the signal going to the internal speaker when a plug is plugged in.
If the headphone jack cracks, breaks, or simply doesn't pass on the signal then you will not get sound from the speakers.
Since you get sound from the headphones, that might be the issue. OR it can be a problem with your speakers.
In any case to solve the problem the unit needs to be taken apart and the headphone jack inspected, and speaker tested.

on mine I can plug a set of computer speakers into the a/v out port and have sound you can also plug in some earbuds for portability but cannot adjust the volume, it is at a comfortable listening level though. be sure to use the a/v out and not the earphone jacks.
Why do I not get any sound from the player?

Looks like several people have this problem. I downloaded a copy of the
manual to see if it had any hidden secrets, but no luck (I don't have
one of these).
This thing has a couple of modes (DVD or A/V
input) that you switch between by pressing and holding the STOP/DVD/AV
button in until it switches. Try switching the mode a couple of times.
Maybe the thing is expecting external audio.
Other than that
there doesn't seem to be any cause other than a defective unit. These
things are made in such quantity and at such low cost that there will
always be duds. If they are still within the return period where you
bought them, then take them back for exchange and test them at the
store. If you can't do that, contact GPX at the phone number or website
about replacing it.
(I personally don't buy GPX for the simple
reason that their stuff has problems sometimes. I went through 3 CD
boomboxes once and swore never again for this brand.)
