Yes it could be the battery, or it could be the use of to many cheats on a gameshark.

Since it is an old GBC game, I would have to say it got damaged. There might also be some dust in the cartridge causing issues or something around those means. Maybe even the battery died, however i dont believe that is the case because that would just prevent you from saving

Hate to tell you this but...I've had games do the same odd things to me.
My second oldest son informed me that the games apparently have batteries in them. If the games aren't played often enough they will drain and the games will become messed up...however,I have yet to confirm this on any site.
My oldest son says that if you have ever had the game hooked up to a gameshark that things like this will occur.
I'll keep looking for a solution for you.
