Code 10

Windows error code 10 indicates a hardware error or failed driver installation. This error may appear if a device has insufficient power to operate correctly (e.g. plugged into a bus powered hub with other devices), or may indicate a more serious hardware problem. Also, it may be indicative of USB root hub drivers being incorrectly installed.

Keep me posted.

Need to format

Hi, You can try: 1. Open your "My Computer" and determine which of your HDs is the Maxtor III, say "E" or "F"; 2. Right click on the Maxtor III; 3. Click on "Format"; 4. On the File System, select FAT 32; 5. Click on "Start" Of course formatting your HD will delete its content. Alternately, you can: a. Open a command prompt window (type "cmd" in "Run"; b. type "format E: /fs:FAT32" assuming your PC assigned the drive letter "E" to the Maxtor III; c. hit "Enter" If for some reason this will not work, you may have to likewise delete the partition first. A handy 3rd party utility for the partition/format of a hard disk is Partition Magic. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turns out or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Freezes both my desktop and laptop and doesn't let me get to my work on it.

Hi, Let see if I got your posting/description right: 1. Whenever you connect/access your Maxtor OneTouch External in either the desktop or laptop, the PC will freeze/hang; and 2. The Maxtor OneTouch External contains important files/data that you'd rather not delete, hence you cannot format it likewise. Your query "Is it possible I deleted something that gives me access and I need to reload that?" - No, I don't think so. From what can be assumed from your post, "I did delete some stuff off..." thereafter, you started having problem with the drive, the probable problem is when you deleted some of your files, the Maxtor OneTouch External has not finished updating what was deleted in its master file listing when it was disconnected, powered down or a power surge or even a slight glitch. The result is the File Allocation Table got messed up. This is like the Table of Contents of a book. The pages/contents are still there but since the Table of Contents is either missing or damaged, the PC would not not what chapter is in what page. Thereafter whenever you connect it to a PC, the PC spends considerable length of time looking for the File Allocation Table, what files to what area of the Maxtor OneTouch External and eventually uses most if not all of its resources just trying to know which and where. If it is still under warranty, claim for a replacement and demand that your files be recovered and transferred to your replacement/new HD. If no longer under warranty or your files will not be recovered for you, you have to google for a freeware file recovery utility/software. The objective is for the utility program to access your external HD and copy the files inside to another HD that can accommodate your file size. it has to be another 120Gb or higher. It is possible that you have to run your PC/Laptop in Safe Mode if it will not run in Normal Mode with the external HD attached. You may want to refer to this link of a similar concern (http://www.fixya.com/support/t191153-device_recognized). You can also check if the external is spinning inside by touching the enclosure. Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post backhow things turn up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Maxtor External Hard Drive No Power

I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.

My Maxtor 1000GB harddrive has stoped working. PN:9NZ2D8-500. SN:2HBECHWY. It connects by a USB and powed by a transformer that was supplied by Maxtor. All of the parts are about two years old, brough

I replace my hard drives after 2 or 3 years. Yours seems to have quit early, possibly the transformer is not working. If your external drive lights up, the electronics could be bad. At any rate, the bad news is it sounds like time for a new drive. I hope you have a backup of the contents.

My Maxtor M3 is showing titles of documents stored from my former office PC but the files will not open on my laptop, other than those with attachments in PDF format, which do open

The application that was used to create those files is not in your laptop. Ergo, they cannot be read.
