Your backlight finally went out. If doing it yourself, you need to order 2 to 4 backlights along with an inverter. It is good to replace both at the same time. The backlights are like mini floresent tubrs that need to be taken out and replaced by some one who has done it before. The cost will run you about 50.00 if you do it yourself.

Did the TV produce sound along with the surround system in the past?

Verify the audio is connected through the TV and not directly to the surround system.

Usually there is an option in the TV setup to disable the internal speakers if the TV has variable audio output or audio pass-through. In Sony TV's this is usually one of the later menus and the option turns the TV speakers on or off, but it depends on the make/model of TV.

Have you got it on "Mute"?

What do you mean exactly when you say 'there is no sound while changing the channels.' is there sound when you turn it to a channel and leave it there???

Remove the cover on the back of the tv. Look for swollen or leaking capacitors. They kinda look like batteries. If they are bulging or leaking then that is your problem. You will have to de-solder the old ones off. Then solder the new capacitors onto the circuit board. Capacitors will cost about 20 dollars and installing them isn't that hard to do. It will fix your tv 99% of the time. So it is worth a try!

I'm assuming that you have checked that the sound is not muted. To confirm that a reset to factory settings is the next procedure: Menu - Setup - General - Factory settings. If you don't see/hear any modifications then it's a hardware defect, not something with the settings.
This happens when the tv thinks that the headphones are used. Simple test to confirm that: plug in a pair of speakers and see if you get the sound on them. If you get and the situation doesn't changes when you unplug them then this is a mechanical defect: the small switch inside the headphone jack is faulty and keeps signaling that the headphones are plugged in when they are not.
The only way to fix that is to replace the jack, which involves a very delicate soldering procedure , one that only a good repairman can do - you must call one.
