check if you have connected the dvd/rom according to the specifications entered. if no then do it and check again if the player reads the disk. if the problem persists, and i you suspect its the manufacturer's error, then you can get a free replacement according to the warranty details

Also Nero is an old favourite too.

Yes - Impact is everything.

I found your answer,
Grab you machine and look at the symbols on the disk draw.

The device you have is a CD/RW-DVD Rom.
What this means it is a CD Writer and a DVD Reader.
This device will never burn DVDs.sorry

To write DVDs you will need to buy DVD/RW device.

My disk drive wont power up

These drives don't work unless you have a non-microsoft CD and/or DVD burning software program. Some Acer el cheapos come with either no program, or one which is configured for Windows XP instead of Vista and therefore causes conflicts and won't work (I speak from experience). Acer is pretty horrible about their support--they might not even inform you whether your computer came with burning software, and they hand out generic insructions which don't list what YOU should have. I recommend downloading Belarc explorer, a free program which not only tells you everything in your computer, with model numbers for hardware and all of your software (with their unique codes), but will also inform you if you are missing any needed Windows updates. Once you know what you have, call Acer telephone support (if you go online for support, they don't even list their telephone number, but try to trick you into thinking you have to use their hair-tearing lousy self-diagnosing troubleshooting programs online, which are worse than useless), and if you get a rep who won't help you, demand to speak to a supervisor, and demand the help you have paid for. It is their problem, not yours. If they tell you it is a Microsoft problem, not theirs, they lie--all preinstalled microsoft programs are serviced by the computer manufacturer, not microsoft. Acer customer support is 800 816-2237, 8 to 5:30

Hi there,
I am assuming you are using XP,

update the drivers via device manager and select the device with the yellow question mark, right click update, reboot and restart

if nothing then remove the device via add/remove programs
select device and remove, reboot and restart

should auto recognise and install the drivers for you,
dont forget to do SP2 updates
Good luck with that,

Let me know how it goes thanks

My laptop can play cd & dvd but can only burn cd and not cvd

If you detect that your driver is missing, I'd first open my Control Panel, and open your systems icon.  From there you'll go to the Hardware Tab and find Device Manager.  Inside the Device manager lists all of your computer devices.  Look for one called DVD/CD rom drives and check to see if it has a triangluar explanation mark next to it.  If it does, then you can right click on the cd's name, and choose update driver. When you open that a window will appear asking you a question about finding the driver.  Choose yes this time only, and click next.  Then click install software automatically, and click next.  Windows will look for the most current driver for that file.   The other option is to go to Acer and download the driver from their site and install it.
Hope this helps.

System file corrupt and CD Drive doesn't work to run Install CD

First: Boot into safe mode on "bad" laptop...

Open a command window...
(start, run, "cmd.exe", <enter>)
At the command prompt, type:
"CHKDSK /F"
It will probably say something about cannot lock the volume, do you want me to schedule a disk check at next startup? Say yes and reboot...

2nd:

Does the other laptop work, and does it have a functioning CD drive?

Yes?

Copy the I386 directory of the XP install CD to the USB Hard Drive using the working laptop.

Then, boot "bad" laptop into safe mode.
Plug USB HDD into "bad lapttop", hope it is recognized and copy the I386 directory to the c:\ drive.
After the copy is complete, run

C:\i386\WINNT32.EXE

Choose upgrade if you wish, but I'd have the program replace the existing windows installation. Leave the HDD as is if asked, do NOT format it. This way, you can navigate around and find your "old" data on the HDD after Windows has finished installing.

Have your installation Key/Serial No. at the ready.

No dvd being read in my acer 4520 laptop

Since on a laptop the laser lens is right in the open with the drive open, it's easy to get it dirty. Try cleaning it with a cotton swab moistened with cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and see if discs read.

It's also possible you have a bad drive. Like any other electronic device, it is possible for a drive to "just quit working" properly. The problem with laptop drives is that they aren't all alike, so you can't just pick up and install a generic replacement like you could on a desktop machine. The easiest solution to a bad internal drive is to get a USB external drive, which has the benefit that you can use it on other computers as well.

Hope this helps!

Removed E drive in accident

Dear dity2325

Right then, this depends on how you mean by the E:\ (CD/DVD) drive was removed. If it was removed physically, and the drive is actually taken out of the laptop then installing it is easy enough. All you need to do is locate the drive the correct way round, and then push it home into the open slot until it locks into place. Then you are pretty much done.

You may have to go into the BIOS/ CMOS settings and make sure that the drive is recognised in the system, if not then there is a way to get the drive to be recognised, but it will mean that you have to scan for hardware changes within the CMOS/ BIOS and then once the drive is detected, you save settings and exit, then you are done.

If the problem is within the windows or other similar operating systme, then you are going to have to format your hard drive, and re-install your operatingg system, and see if windows then picks up the drive again. If it does not, then it will be a lot easier to just discard the old optical drive, and buy a new one as they are somewhat cheaper now than they were a few years ago. If you do decide to service the unit yourself, then i cn provide you with technical assistance on this too, but i will need to know a lot more details about your computer system in order for me to help you.

Well i do look forward to hearing what you have to comment or ask with regards to this matter, and i will reply to you as soon as possible with more information should you need it.

In the meantime I hope that this is the fixya for you, and also wish this matter to be resolved with this information provided.

hope to hear from you soon, and take care.

yours sincerely
