The pc will not connect

First try uninstalling the software, rebooting your pc, and then re-installing the latest software from the Olympus website.

If that fails, then bypass the fault entirely. Buy a cheap external xDcard reader and connect that to your pc instead and upload from there instead. External readers are always faster and less problematic.

Zoom lens will not extend

Good day,

This tip will explain a few methods on how to try and fix your lens if it is stuck or you get a lens error on your screen.

Please note that all these methods are used at the users own risk and that I can not be held responsible for any damages or losses that occur while trying these methods.

1. If your camera is still under warranty, send your camera to the manufacturer to be replaced or fixed professionally.

2. If your camera is out of warranty try these methods.

  • Make sure your batteries are fully charged.
  • Remove the batteries for 10min. Replace the batteries and see if the problem persists.
  • Try compressed air. This method can be useful if there are any sand or any other object stuck in the lens motors. Use compressed air with a fine tip. Direct the air between the camera body and lens and move in a circular motion around the lens to complete a full rotation.
  • You can also try to tap the padded USB cover firmly on a flat surface like a table. This is sometimes a surprisingly effective method.
  • The last method is to try and force the lens. Turn of your camera and place it on its back on a flat surface. Look at the spacing between the lens and the body and see if the gap is consistent all the way around the lens. If the gap is not even it is likely that the camera fell while the lens was extended. Now VERY GENTLY push down on the lens were the gap is the biggest until you her a "click". This will indicate that the lens is back in place. Try powering back on.
  • If the lens does not extend or it extend and retracts turn of the camera. Hold the camera in your one hand and with the other hand turn the one part of the lens in a circular motion. Rotate both sections of the lens until you hear a "click". This will indicate that the lens popped back in place. Power the camera back on.
  • The last method you can use is to turn the lens while powering on the camera until you hear a "click". Power the camera of and back on to see if it works.
If any of the methods listed above failed to work for your lens problem it would be wise to take it on to a professional to get your camera repaired.

Thanks for taking the time to read my tip and feel free to let me know if it was of any help.

Regards

At night cannot see screen and therefore cannot

On Auto Setting, hit menu, then scroll down until you get to the display set option. It will have small graduated lines on the left side, and say "bright" on the other. That's your lcd display brightness setting. Good luck!

Camera turns on then immediately turns off

Quick turnoff is normally a symptom of low battery power. Make sure that you have fresh/charged batteries in the camera. If fresh power doesn't solve the problem you will need professional service on the camera.

Lens doesn't retract

The original problem was a camera with jammed lens mechanism or faulty lens motor. I think the camera had been replaced.

The following post is directed to new users following up on this thread, as the original problem had already been sorted:

When the lens will not retract and camera is not functional (no picture on display, and does not shoot) , and you already tried replacing batteries with a new fresh set (ensure please) , and then restarting camera with no memory card inside, then camera is faulty.

Try an easy fix by pushing gently the lens (do not force them, just help them) while you turn off camera at same time. Try also switching the mode selector.

If still no luck , then the camera must be disassembled to fix the problem.

Possible reasons are :

  • Faulty lens mechanism or jammed lens (camera usually turns off by itself in this case)
  • Main board faulty.
  • Ribbon cable to main board broken or connector defective.
  • If there is no power at all it is the connector from batteries to main board, this is also a ribbon cable.

If the camera is less than one year old will be replaced by manufacturer.

If your warranty is expired you can get an estimate for repair from manufacturer, or from a third party like Advance Camera here :Advance Camera Repair you can book the repair online.

Camera not turning on

Lever inside camera does not trigger 'on switch' , probably because assembly unglued or piece of lever broke off.

Trouble with video recording

The length of the movies you can record is dependent on both the memory you have left on the card, and the recording mode you are on. With a clean card, and on the default recording mode, your movies should go back up in length. you might be in HQ record mode while you should be on SQ for longer recording time. If all fails, try reformatting the card. Good luck, hope this helped.

Olympus stylus 1 just froze with lens extended. I took battery and card out for 2 hrs. and still no power.

Try this, set the dial to P, then open the battery door and then press the Menu button and OK button together for about 5 seconds. If you see something in the screen like Olympus? Then press the Menu and OK button together again for another 5 seconds, this is a hard reset and hope it fixes your problem?

Why camera says one moment and does not seem to want to recognize computer

Most brands of cameras deliver a CD with the camera, containing software, needed to backup, transfer and work with the pictures you shot, to a computer. Most of the time there is software is for both, Windows and MAC. Before you connect the camera to any computer, you should install the software. The disk also has the drivers for the old operating systems. If you lost the CD, or just don't know where it is right now, you can go to the site of your camera brand and try to download the software you need. For that look under support. If your camera is old, and the brand does not exist anymore, try a freeware picture transfer / editing software pack. Like Gimp or Adobe Photoshop elements. Just connecting a camera to a computer causes two things. The camera shuts down, and the computer won't recognise the camera. So nothing works. If you can't get software form your brand, you always can install other generic software like Ulead, Pixir, BeFunkey, Gimp, Photoshop express. Or if that is not possible you could install an external memory card reader and download the pictures via de memory card reader.
