As soon as you connect a camera to a computer, the camera shuts down, because it only can act as a "dumb" memory stick.

Did you check your volume settings to make sure your sound is enabled and the volume is adequate? I've found that certain applications turn down selected sound levels or mute them altogether and I have to go into the volume control and unmute it or turn it up.
