It's possible that either the format of the disc or the format of the movie is incompatible with your DVD player. Not all players will play all of the disc formats, those being DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW. The other possibility is the format of the video. If you made an exact copy of a retail DVD it should work as long as the format of the disc is okay.
