91 Tracker starts fine, goes up to about 3000 RPM warms uo and drops down to a steady 1200-1500. Is this normal range? I think its a little high, and during warm up runs pretty rich. Lots of black soot from the exhaust.

All the above is normal , except 2000rpm is a little high at idle . can be adjusted down to 1500rpm. the computer adjusts the engine speed . in drive the transmission loads up the engine idle drops to 1000rpm . in park engine unloaded rpm increase all normal.

Hi Tim, The engine with manual transmission should idle at 700 RPM. Usable rev range is from idle speed to between 3000 and 4500 (usable torque range for maximum efficiancy) but not exceeding the red line of 6000 RPM. Regards John

try changing filter in transmission. sounds like filter may be stopped up.

check out the idle control valve first

Run a vacuum test. Start motor and try to rev a little. If the vacuum drops it could be a plugged cat or muffler, some type of exhaust restriction. Vacuum should pull steady at 15 to17 inches at idle. This is just one possibility.

Replace idle contol sensor.

This sounds normal to me! The engine will read that rpm when accerlerating lightly. It is the stall of the torque convertor. The oil pressure will always be higher when the rpm's are higher, or when the oil is thicker - cold.

Virbration? That is a different story. Oil won't cause that.
