If no check engine light then you have a failing transmission which is unfortunately common in this year.

SOURCE: 99 sable

The problem is with your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) located on the passenger side axle housing. It will cost approx. $300 to have Ford dealer do it.

first of all, check the kickdown cable to transmission. it may be out of adjustment. or just bad.if its the cable out of adjustment, it is sure cheaper then a tranny.

After rebuilding a transmission on 96 mercury sable, car still will down shift to low from drive. Speed odemeter quit working and cruise quit working. Any ideas

Have you tried replacing the speed sensor? Also is your car a column shift or floor shifter? If it is a column shifter make sure to inspect your linkage between the shifter and the tranny.

Got a 96 mercury sable with a transmission problem I would like to replace it but dont have any manuals to describe process. Can you help? Thanks Pat

To replace the transmission you will need to:

lift the vehicle
support then engine using a hoist
Support the transmission using a hoist
Unbolt the motor mounts (There are 4 of them)
Lower the engine 8 - 10 inches
Unbolt the transmission
Lower the transmission
Raise up the new transmission and follow the steps in reverse.

Trust me, this is NOT fun :( the top transmission bolt is REALLY hard to get to.

1996 MERCURY SABLE 65,000 MILES ON SPEEDO. TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP ALSO RUST UNDER VEHICLE. LINCOLN MERCURY STATED REPAIR WOULD COST 4 TO 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUNK THE VEHICLE

Transmission problems are an issue with Sables. If you Google transmission and Mercury Sable you will come to quite a few complaints. There are actually a few posts on this website where folks are having issue too. Personally a cheap o-ring in my 1999 Sable went out resulting in a $1800 transmission repair bill. I literally gave the car away about three years ago. In almost 20 years of owning vehicles the two years I had the Sable was the most expensive and busiest in the way of repairs.
