1998 Chevy Cavalier trunk release issue PLEASE HELP

Randomly last night by trunk decided it doesn't need to latch. this is aggravating. i have no desire to drive around looking like one of the beverly **** with duct tape holding my trunk closed and also do not have the money to take it to a mechanic for a few weeks. is there some way that I can fix this myself? the mechanism on the trunk itself will close around a ballpoint pen, so that piece seems to be in working order. there does not appear to be anything obstructing the hinges or the latch itself. any advice would be appreciated. thanks.

Well I had the same problem after I ran into a tree from the back. I hadnt opened my trunk since the incident and when I finally opened it it wouldnt close.
If it will hold the ball point pen, then its not the lock mechanism. But If you look at the bar that it connects to, it might be obstructed. I had to hammer the hell out of the metal parts surrounding the bar to knock the metal parts down. And it closed. So the problem was that the connecting bar was too short. So try to knock all the metal around it to free it and make it a longer bar.

SOURCE: Cant find there trunk release button or switch for
A trunk release button is not included in most Cavalliers. The cavalier came standard with electronic trunk release from the keyless entry keyring. Otherwise you need to use the key.

2001, it is inside the glove box, left side.

98 chevy cavalier trunk won't stay shut

Could be. Or the electric part of the latch could be faulty.
Assuming you have an electric release you should be able to disconnect it and just use a key.

Can't get the trunk on 98 cavalier to latch

there should be an adjust screw on the housing that allows the catch bar to adjust up or down, just loosen and adjust and then re-tighten. that should do it

Trunk latch wont hold shut on my 02 cavalier

Make sure it is not binding/sticking where you pull the release cable.

Drench the entire works in WD-40. Push it back and forth until it moves with no resistance.

Make sure the part that hooks onto the latch hasn't come loose enough to not slide over when it makes contact.

If that doesn't work, take the whole thing off. You'll have to anyway to replace it. Chances are with it disassembled you'll see what's wrong.
