02 chevy cavalier-trunk wont shut. All parts appear to be in working order-but latch wont hold trunk close-it goes to grab the latch-but doenst lock it to hold closed-should I replace the whole assembly? or is it easier to fix than that?
Make sure it is not binding/sticking where you pull the release cable.
Drench the entire works in WD-40. Push it back and forth until it moves with no resistance.
Make sure the part that hooks onto the latch hasn't come loose enough to not slide over when it makes contact.
If that doesn't work, take the whole thing off. You'll have to anyway to replace it. Chances are with it disassembled you'll see what's wrong.
[ I am wondering of maybe the assembly inside is bent? It appears it may have been bent from slamming or forcing it closed previously????]
I think that's exactly what is wrong. There may have been something laying it over it and someone, without realizing it at first, tried repeatedly to slam it shut. If you can get a pry bar of some sort inside the latch to bend it up slightly, it should provide enough more purchase for the interior hook to catch it.

ok i tried w-40ing the heck out of it and taken it off from the trunk-seperated from the and the latch seems to only have minor wear and tear. I am wondering of maybe the assembly inside is bent? It appears it may have been bent from slamming or forcing it closed previously???? its not sticking and the catch and release seems to work-but its not catching the latch on the car itself (which also shows signs of minor wear and tear). I tried to open tihe actual release component-but its welded togehter and no screws to take apart-could the component inside possibly be bent? or the latch on the car itself is bent and not noticable enough to tell causing it to not catch?
the plastic knob broke off and won't stay glued on after shutting a few times
