Ac belt broken. Is car safe to drive? How hard is this belt to replace?

Check your drive belts. Possible loose or broken off.

if a drive belt breaks, the debris can interfere with other engine components and do additional damage. rule of thumb belt life is 6yrs or 60000 miles. the belts operate critical engine systems ( alt, water pump, power steering pump) not something to short cut on. belts are noisey when cold due to additional load from battery use when starting or cold fuuids. have belts and tensioners checked for wear and correct operation

I'm not sure where these other guys live but their solutions are nonsense. Coolant leaks? Fuel pumps? Dead or dying batteries? I too drive a 05 Scion xB and have had squeak issues. These squeaks and squeals are caused by one or both of the serpentine belts. If not the belts then the pulley's associated with the belts. One of the belts drives the power steering and the other operates the Alternator, Water Pump and AC Compressor.
Does your car squeak when you have the AC turned on and the fan running fairly fast?
Do you hear a rough kind of noise when you're turning the wheel? If it's either or those two then I'd check your belts.
But still to be on the safe side I'd bring it to a mechanic and have them check the belts for glazing or wear then go from there. If you can put belts on yourself they will run you about $40 for the pair. Most garages charge an arm and a leg for them and then another appendage to install them.

The coil inside the mechanism must be broken you will have to get that replaced because driving around with only half a seat belt is dangerous. Be Safe than Sorry!

If you remove the A/C compressor and don't make the needed changes for the serpentine belt to still be installed, then no it won't be safe ot drive. You won't have any power steering for one and that would make turning the wheels extremely difficult. Since the water pump also need the sepentine belt to operate, your engine will overheat in a short amount of time.

As long as it only is the ac then its fine, just replace it when you got some spare cash, or want heat back

You broke your serpatine belt. Needs replacing. It's a $50ish part and easy to do if you have a diagram under the hood of how the belt fits. But if it was "rattling" for a couple of weeks take it in for crying out loud. Let the mechanic look it over to make sure your lack of vechile care didn't destroy anything under the hood.....

For $1500 i'm going to have to assume they are replacing more then just the serpentine belt. Did the A/C compressor seize causing the belt to break? If so, 1500 still seems a little high unless they are trying to get you to replace the other parts in the system. It's not out of the question to replace the receiver drier and the orifice tube when replacing the compressor but they are pretty accessible.

If i remember correctly the a/c belt only drives the A/c compressor. So, you could just leave the belt off with no other ill effects other then obviously having no A/C and less effective defrost.

check your a/c compressor to make sure it hasn't locked up.
