Maybe a leaking charcoal can. or one of the tubes-rubber hoses that go's from the tank to it leaking which in turn would give the same code as the gas cap failure as before because the system is not closed or sealed .Which would inturn cause the light to come back on.

Hi:
The gas cap is usually a good suspect in this case, but to figure it out, you need to have your code scanned to figure out what is causing the light. Most auto parts stores will scan it for free, so give them a shot

The engine light came on and it said "service engine soon". I called On-star and they said to drive it seven more times. They said the diagnostic code was P0442. I looked it up and it said possible

I don't know the age of your car, but it is likely the O ring on the gas cap is leaking, not allowing the fuel system to work properly. If you forgot to put on the gas cap or did not tighten it, after seven runs, the check engine light should clear. If it does not, then the easiest solution is to buy a new gas cap from the dealer. It will be about $25 - $30, and you can install it yourself. After installing the new cap, and seven trips later, IF the gas cap was the problem, the light should clear.

I have tried to replace the O ring on a cap before, but found it nearly impossible. Another trick would is to lightly coat the O ring with vasoline - then seven trips to see if that clears the light. This is only a temporary solution, but it may tell you if the problem is the gas cap. Godd luck!

What's your problem? check gas cap light is on and i already replaced the cap

Take the vehicle to a qualified repair shop an have the EVAP system smoke tested , this will find the leak . Too many thing's that could cause your problem . You don't want to keep replacing parts do you ? Could be a stuck open purge solenoid , a leak in one of the vapor lines , the part the gas cap screws into, vent valve stuck open . Service engine light on ? have checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . You'll probably fine a evap code for a large leak.

Why does service engine soon with gas cap code keep coming on even after buying new gas cap?

Get gas cap from dealer as some vehicles are having issues with the after market caps. What is the actual code and what's the vehicle year, make and model?

My 2007 chevy impala engine light is on. I got a new gas cap. Auto zone scanned and cleared the car. 2 days later, the light came on again. Any idea what's wrong?

If I had a code? and engine code (8th VIN number) Stay out of ottozone, they just sell parts that they think you need. gas caps are rarely bad.

My service engine light came on, i went to get it reset and i thought the problem was solved. few days later the light came on again. i found out what the problem is my po442 emission vapor control...

Usually a vapor control fault is caused by not putting the gas cap on straight, or by a leaking gas cap. This car is 10 years old, so you may have a leaking gas cap.
Also check for damage to the neck of the gas filler such as might happen if someone drove off with the nozzle still in the car, but neither your spouse nor any of the kids will know anything about such an event (!) If the neck is not damaged and you are sure that you are putting the gas cap on properly, try a new cap.
On most cars, this code will reset itself after a few start cycles if the problem is fixed, so you should not need to take it anywhere to get the light reset if you solve the problem.

Remote start problem triggers check engine light

The factory remote start system is designed to not function
when ever a check engie light is illuminated. The issue would have to be diagnosed by dealer and repaired. The remote starter should work again after repairs.

Gas caps don't fit and cause the service engine

Yes, the wrong Gas Cap will cause your Engine Light to come-on and stay-on. The Gas Cap is connected with your emissions/EVAP system which is monitored by the computer. An incorrect Cap would cause incorrect cycling of fuel vapors, causing errors.
Only get your Gas Cap from the Desk at the Autoparts Store after they have looked it up on the computer. OR go to a Dealer to get the correct Cap, but this is usually more expensive. OR call a local Junk / Auto Salvage Yard and see if they have one for your specific/exact vehicle (this is the cheapest means). DO NOT by a generic Cap from the shelf, even if it says it fits all Ford's.

Service enj soon lite

Try resetting the computer. Disconnect your battery for 5-10 minutes and reconnect. This should get rid of the light if the gas cap was the problem. If it comes back on take it to an Advanced Auto or Auto zone and get an Engine Diagnostic, they're free. Hope this helps
