Your diagnosis is spot-on. When the water pump seals fail, coolant will exit through a small hole at the bottom of the pump housing. Because of all the moving/rotating parts in that area, sometimes it isn't immediately apparent where the leak is, but it is almost always a failed pump.

Your water pump is driven by your camshaft.Looking and the water pump on the center bottem toward the back of the water pump there's a small hole if water pump bad will be leaking coolant from there.hope this was helpful.

Check your bottle cap, ensure that cap is tight. If it is, replace cap. Cap is not holding pressure.

2000 Honda accord, just had timing belt done, two weeks later, there's what looks like antifreeze and oil leaking badly, and smoke. Never had a leak in 19 years. Is it the timing belt job, or what?

Hard to say, Could be a leaking water pump seal or expansion plug . hook up a radiator tester and pump to the pressure on the radiator cap and check the location of the leak.19 years

Antifreeze leak

The hoses could seem ok but have tiny cracks in them that you can't see if they were not replaced. With antifreeze the flange the hose goes on could be rusting from antifreeze and cutting the hose. Cut the end of the hose past the clamp mark if there is enough slack. and put back on. The clamp could either be too tight and cutting the hose on the metal flange or not tight enough. Squeeze the hose and if you see cracking in the hose replace it. Also, if you over fill it it could be a problem or you got a bad radiator. If it is a tiny leak in the radiator you can use radiator stop leak. http://picsbox.biz/key/radiator%20leak%20sealant. Check all the hoses and clamps and make sure the belt on the water pump is ok too. Good luck. They are a great car and worth the effort especially if you havea V6.

How do i tell where my water pump is and whether it is working properly or not

Where the water pump is actually located depends on what engine your vehicle is equipped with. Most water pumps will work just fine until they start leaking. You will see antifreeze leaking on the ground near the front PULLY END of the engine. In rare cases, the warter pump has internal damage from the impellers being badly corroded. This is usually accompanied by a lot of brown "sludge" in the radiator tank. If you do not have this brown sludge, (your antifreeze looks clean) then this is most likely not the problem.

My 1996 oldsmobile acheiva is leaking antifreeze but it doesn't seem to be a leak in the radiator. Could my water pump need replacement?

Sounds like the radiator is OK...if you cannot see any visible leaks...if you have inspected upper and lower radiator hoses and connections...it could be the water pump...however you should be able to see some antifreeze around the water pump pulley...changing the water pump on your Oldsmobile is not a major job...you do not have to remove any motor mounts to do this...only if your serpentine belt is worn and needs replacement...your Olds will require the removal of the upper motor mount in order to change the serpentine belt...sounds like you are on the right track...:)

Antifreeze is not circulating through radiator. Radiator is new - 2 months old. Also, no heat and fast idle.

Problem is not your radiator--unfortunate for you. It's more likely the water pump. The water pump pumps the water around through your radiator to be cooled and then through the engine block to cool your motor. Before you go tearing the water pump out though, you may want to check to see if your fan belt is in good condition and working properly because the water pump works off of the fan belt turning the pulley to pump the water around. If the fan belt is off that pulley, it may need to be put back on or re-routed correctly to start pumping the water.

Then if that is not your problem, the water pump will probably need to be replaced. I believe it can be accessed from underneath the engine compartment, but first you will have to take the tension off the fan belt and remove the belt, then loosen the bolts around the front of the water pump. Put a catch pan under the car though because all your water/antifreeze will come gushing out. That water pump should be available at your local AutoZone or another auto parts store for around $100.

My car started overheating. I was almost out of antifreeze, but my reserve tank still had antifreeze. Put a sealant in the radiator believing there was a leak, as well as the 50/50 mix, but it still ran...

Not likely water pump unless pump is leaking. You need to figure out where the antifreeze leaked out. Can you see anything leaking with radiator full and engine running? I have some tips at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5929960-s_thermostat if you want to troubleshoot. Let me know if you have questions.

Antfreeze leak not allowing belt to get traction where might the antifreeze be coming from and how can fix it

check all the hoses. next, check the water pump, should be behind the fan. If the bearings have gone bad in the water pump, it can sometimes leak coolant everywhere.
