I have a 2005 Ford Escape 4 wheel drive, I am now experiencing a womwomwom noise in the rare wheel when driving and it is getting louder, it almost sound like an helicopter hovering?.can some on help me please. Prickley.

Does it get louder as you go faster? This could be a bad wheel bearing. Go for a drive on a safe street or road with no traffic. Drive at 40 mph and now put the vehicle in neutral and shut the engine off. If you still have this noise it is probably a wheel bearing. Try to determine which corner the noise is loudest to find which wheel bearing is making the most noise. You may need to lift all 4 wheels off the ground and test to find the noise. Be careful and use jack stands. I hope this helps. Rod

check tires as well. But yea if you are driving when the noise exists, swaying back and forth in lanes will let you know if its a hub noise. If its a hub noise the growl will be louder or different when weight shifts off and on the hub. Where weight is on the hub it usually gets louder. Alot of the time there may be two problems like tires and hub noise. Tire noise is easier as rotating front wheels and rear wheels will change position of growling/howling noises.

lift vechiel and support by jack stand. grab top and bottom of tire and wiggle it in and out, alternatly. or up and down, depending on how you look at it. but easiest way is to drive it. when noise happens, turn left and right, if noise gets louder or quieter as you turn then its guareenteed to be a wheel bearing. turn left and get louder, replace right side. if turn right and gets louder replace left side. if noise does not change due to turning. then not wheel bearing making noise.

That's a bad wheel bearing. If when driving and you swerve side to side and its loud one way and not the other or not as bad the other then its a wheel bearing. As for the metal shavings on the plug don't worry about it unless there are chunks of metal then you should have the rear end inspected.

Hello, Sounds like you've got a bad wheel bearing there or a bad 4X4 hub there. You should have that looked at immediately as the unit in question will seize up at anytime. The usual way the noise goes is it will get louder & louder, then quiet down, then that wheel will just seize up & lock up solid. Try feeling the center of the wheel after driving it and you will find it to be very hot (hot enough to make water steam). Please replace the unit soon before you regret it. Good Luck!

you will need to scan for ABS code......possible a wheels speed sensor is bad....also this will effect the 4X4. and engine/trans....first start with diagnostics to correctly save time and money, this can be a complex system....hope this helps....GL
