Hope this helps, the color code is at the bottom. I looked up your year--make--model in my database, 2.4L engine. At the main fuel level sensor at the bottom, the top wire should be voltage, the bottom black wire is ground. I did see a couple trouble codes for fuel level sensor, one was a po code, the other was manufacturer specific code. I know nothing about this vehicle other than what my database shows. good luck

SOURCE: 1966 Ford Mustang Gas Guage not working

I had a similar problem. In my 1966 Mustang gas tank, the fuel pick-up was on a "float." My float developed a hole, filled with gasoline, and sank to the bottom of the tank, therefore, the gauge always read empty, but the car ran well. All the other gauges of course worked correctly. The repair was a relatively simple soldering job (after removing the float from the tank), but if that is indeed the problem, ensure all the gasoline is drained from the float before beginning the soldering job.

SOURCE: 2000 buick century custom. fuel gauge fluctuates

The sender unit has a fine resistance wire with a slider to read the level, the slider or wires are worn and making intermittent contact, the low fuel light is a seperate switch so it will still work.access to the sender is usually under the rear seat cushon, under the soundproofing and a cover, have a look and describe what you have .

Gas gauge staying at empty when tank is full

Spencer, Check all fuses ,plugs and grounding at the tank. The sending unit module, inside the GM's gas tanks were notorious for going bad in this err, when you changed it did you use a quality part? Also the fuel pump sending unit plug/wire harnesses were known issues, so much that replacement pumps would often come with replacement plug to splice into existing harness. Check the attached links, instruction and guides on how to trouble shoot fuel gauge/sending unit, Good luck

Fuel gauge consantly reeds half tank of fuel how do i test gauge and or sender unit

Sorry, but fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit are all one unit, and in the tank.! There should be 2 straps that come off, drop the tank(preferably empty) and it's out.
NOTE* disconnect all fuel lines first and disconnect battery is a safe bet too.

Fuel gauge Stuck

The most common way to find out is to test both components.
The sending unit in most vehicles grounds the gauge on the dash.
You would unplug the sending unit - pump harness at the tank and ground the sending unit wire. If the gauge climbs up to full the sending unit is at fault.
You could also measure resistance in the circuit in the tank when the tank is close to empty and after filling it up. The resistance should be different each time.

1984 Ford F150 Fuel gauge reads empty

I would bet the sending unit is bad but lets check it, a good test i use is that i have a used sending unit i connect to wiring to test the gauge and wiring, if the gauge moves when i move the testing unit then i know the gauge is good and the wiring to, locte the connector at fuel tank, and unplug it, this will be the one the leads to top of the tank and the connector will be on the side be the frame on drivers side, the way you know you have the right connector will be the truck will not run as this connector has the sending unit and pump wires in it, if the gauge goes to full then you know the wiring is good and the gauge is good, you can jump the two wires and gauge should go to full also. the problem is you must get the right wires for sending unit or you may pop fuse, let me see if i can get you a wiring diagram or just do the full test by unplugging connector.

Okay, your sending unit has a yellow and white wire, thats the sending unit wire, the other is a ground and we wont worry about that. so if you want to see if gauge will go to empty or full just unplug connector and gauge will move to full then if you take a wire and jump the yellow wire with white stripe to a good ground the gauge will go to empty, the thing is your gauge is on empty so sending unit may be grounded out, good day10_21_2012_4_15_34_pm.gif

My battery keeps dying in my '94 accord and I think it has something to do with the fuel gauge/sending unit. When I turn the key off the fuel gauge still reads the fuel level. I disconnected the fuel...

The fuel sending unit is bad. When they go bad they will read at different levels than what is in the tank. It could be grounding out but not likely when you remove the power wires.

Hello: my gas gauge is not working on my 1998 cavalier , any help any suggestions, thank you.

you should be able to find the fuel tank harness under the car near the fuel tank. If you look just in front of the rear axle on the drivers side you will see two connectors Unplug the connector with the grey, purple, black, and black/white wires.

Ground the purple wire. Turn the key to the run position. The gauge should read full. If it does you have a bad sending unit (the part in the tank that tells the gauge what the fuel level is at).

If the gauge still reads empty you have a bad gauge.

How many wires are running from the float from gas tank, I only see one . my fuel Gage reads empty but when I unplug the wire it reads full then when I plug it in it reads empty again what do I look for

I think by what you have decribed is the gauge in the dash itself is bad. When the wire is unpluged the gauge should read empty. I assume that this is an older Chevy with a mechanical fuel pump being there is only one wire. You can also check to see if the sending unit in the tank is operating properly but reading the ohmn's thru the wire.

Faulty gas gauge

Most of the time its is the sending unit in the fuel tank. The test for it is to use a variable resistor that is hooked up to the wiring at the fuel tank and watch the fuel gauge if the gauge works ok thats makes 100% sure its the sending unit. At 245 ohms the gauge should read full, 180 ohms for 3/4 full, 160 ohms for 1/2 tank, 100 ohms for 1/4 tank and 42 ohms for empty. The color of wires at the fuel tank is purple wire and black wire. You can also use fixed value resisters. If the fuel gauge the wires from the sending unit to computer then to gauge for bad connections, shorts, broken wire and bad grounds. If the wires test ok that only leaves insterrment cluster or computer which even most dealers can't test eather one but the insterment cluster would be a more common problem then the computer. But about 95% of the time it will be the fuel level sensor in the gas tank that causes the problem. Good luck.
