Window on distributor cap is to set dwell, not timing. You can set dwell by removing the distributor cap and gapping the points to specification, then verifying with a dwell meter. If dwell is off, remove the distributor cap and adjust as needed.
To set timing, use a timing light and highlight the appropriate mark on the harmonic damper (i.e., 8 degrees BTDC). With the vacuum line disconnected from the distributor, and the engine idling at the specified speed, view the timing with the timing light and adjust as necessary by rotating the distributor. Once set, tighten the distributor hold down bolt.

SOURCE: what is distributor timing for 1964 buick skylark

The timing is 2 1/2 degrees BTDC. The point gap is .016 and the dwell is 30. To set the dwell turn the adjusting screw clockwise until the engine starts to misfire and then back it off 1/2 turn. Hope this helps.

Why would you need to set TDC if you just pulled the Dist. Cap? The TDC mark is on the Harmonic Balancer, sounds like you should let a Pro help you out, Ford also places a 1 where 1 wire should be on the cap, No 1 wire is the front cylinder on the passenger side, with the crankshaft set at TDC the rotor will point to where No 1 wire should be. If you haven't removed the wires yet don't. The best way to replace ignition wires is to remove ONE at a time and replace with a new one before moving on to the next. That way you won't get the firing order mixed up. Hope this helps

I tuned up my 1965 Dodge Coronet with 440 engine now it won't start and back fires.

If you removed the distributor it was put in wrong. Of you moved the distributor it's out of time. If you did not move the distributor or remove the distributor . Recheck the spark plugs and wires they maybe on the cap incorrectly.

How to replace vacuum advance on a 1965 Cadillac

C.I. is the usual way of indicating a Compression Ignition or diesel engine. Some old GM diesels used vacuum units but I never saw one with a vacuum advance unit.

Old Cadillac probably used a Delco-Remy distributor. Simple to repair/overhaul and mostly they needed it due to the high degree of wear they suffered.
Changing the vac unit should present no problems as long as there is enough room around it to remove the retaining screws and manipulate the unit to unhook the arm from the baseplate and withdraw the unit.

If there isn't room it is best to remove the distributor rather than struggle. I seem to remember the unit removes easily but doesn't go back very easily. Again, I seem to remember I used to bend one of the mounting lugs back a little to provide extra maneuvering room. It has been a long time so my memory might have confused it with another type...

The timing will need checking/adjusting to complete the job.

65mustang 289 backfires and spits back in carb timing chain is good new evever thing points plugs and wires ran good went south all at once any ideals

Recheck timing. Get #1 cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Make sure the timing mark on the balancer is where it should be. Then pull the cap and make sure the rotor button is pointing to the #1 wire on the cap.

I need to know were the number 1 is on the distributor cap on a 69 buick electra engine is aa 430.

Standing in front of the car you should see a small square "window" on the passenger side of your cap. just barely in front of the passenger side valve cover. #1 is the first hole past that window toward the firewall or about 8 o'clock on the cap. The rotor button turns clockwise and the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Hope this helps.
