Standing in front of the car you should see a small square "window" on the passenger side of your cap. just barely in front of the passenger side valve cover. #1 is the first hole past that window toward the firewall or about 8 o'clock on the cap. The rotor button turns clockwise and the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Hope this helps.
Due to the age of the vehicle in question. I suggest attempting to locate the actual location of number one cylinder instead of instead of relying on the factory position that is indicated in the service manual. with the engine off and the distributor cap off, manually turn the engine over with a breaker bar and socket on the harmonic balancer bolt. Align the timing marks on the balancer and timing scale. Now look at the position of the rotor. Set the cap back on the distributor and trace the wire to the cylinder. If the cylinder is at the front of the motor then you've found number one cylinder. If not , then turn the motor one revolution until the marks line up again. The wire that goes to the front of the motor is number one cylinder. Remember : The normal direction of rotation during engine operation is clockwise when looking at the front of the motor.
