Hi, i have a 316i and every now and then it starts to cough and splutter. Any ideas what it could be?

Start by changing the plugs and wires.Then clean out fuel system with injection cleaner added to fuel.

Depending on the mileage of the vehicle sounds like the timing belt has stretched. If the coughing is when you give it gas but not when it is not under load timing belt would be my guess. Good luck and drive safe.

The float for your gauge is in fuel tank. Re: your cough & sputter problem it could possibly be clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump.

I have a bmw 316i e36 1998 when i start the car it and reve it it got like a splutter i have changed the spark plugs and the crank case vent valve + pipes it got better but still has a splutter that comes...

try cleanin the throttle body with nonchlorinated cleaner-inspect idle air also and egr--make sure plug wires r not old and inspec distributer area--secure a shop manual

There is a cold start valve on the throttle body,may just need a clean.Check for damp in the ht leads and use wd40 or another lube to dispell moisture.Check your vacuum hoses for splits as at that age they will have cracks and leaks not visible even after removing.Have you ever changed the petrol filter just as a precaution and what is the condition of the sparkplugs as worn one work on hot tempretures but mess around in the cold.

on some diesel engines the glow plugs will cycle after the engine is started. it does sound like your glow plugs are not all working that would cause the hard start and excessive smoke when it does start.

Change out the Duraspark module, they are very cheap and that is the usual suspect.
