I'm going to suggest one of two things. Firstly, I would say have your alternator looked at. The alternator recharges your battery when the vehicle is running, but if it is on the last leg of it's life, it can actually work too hard and drain your battery, especially during short drives. You may also just check and see if the battery has in fact lost all of it's power. Crazy things happen!
Start with removal of the battery and getting it charged overnight and tested. If the battery is good then you have lost your power source to the ignition switch. Check cables for loose/corrosion. Thats where to start
can be either on or both. if you have a volt meter handy get the car started and place the leads on the terminals on the battery, if the alternator is working you should have over 13 volts indicated.
the battery or which post is which? First, the positive (+) post is ALWAYS larger than the negative (-). The posts are well marked next to each post. If you llok at the terminals, follow which one is connected to the body of the car, thats ALWAYS the negative cable (-)
Most vehicles if you get the car running and unhook the positive battery cable it will stay running that is because it is running off the alternator. if it dies like your talking about I would most definitely say your alternator needs to be replaced. Most likely when you jumped your father in laws pick up there was a bad ground somewhere and your alternator got a surge of electricity and it fried it. Hope this helps.
