Why wont my 2002 ford escape move in reverse but no foward gears it is an automatic transmission?

Sounds like you need a transmission rebuild :(
Typical symptom of transmission failure, especially in a vehicle as old as yours. Have you ever replaced the transmission fluid or filter? No? Hmmmm... ;)

I would check the linkage and if it is all connected and working then the problem is internal. A pump can go and leave no shavings or metal flakes in the pan.

To check the linkage put the truck on ramps, support it with jackstands crawl under the truck while someone sits in the drivers seat with the parking break on. Watch the linkage levers on the transmission as the person in the truck moves the shift lever (while firmly mashing the breaks) also listen for a distinct "clicking" sound in the transmission as it moves through the gears. Again if the linkage is okay and it sounds like things are moving with the shift leaver then the problem is most likely a worn pump.

Had same problem on Ford Escape, Could not unlock the rear liftgate or window, if you can open you are in better luck.
If it is locked and closed, you will have to pull the top portion of the plastic trim away from the liftgate, it is held in place by metal retaining clips on top, and four screws on the bottom, if you can open, remove the screws then remove the rest of the panel, if unable, pull the top of the panel just far enough to reach in and unlock the liftgate.
Once you have the gate open and the panel off, you will see the locking actuator connected to the electrical connetion, it is a little bit smaller then a pack of cigarettes with a black lever.

To remove you will need to remove the two outter 10mm nuts holding the "brass" colored assembly, you will probably have to disconnect the two lever connections to get to the back side of the brass assembly, once this is done, you can use a T-20 torx to remove the locking actuator, part number stamped on my part was 4510 5424 made by KIEKERT although a search of this part didnt give me any good results, anyway, that was the cause of my problem, once replace and all put back together everything worked fine.

I had the defective cooler replaced yesterday and the Ford service manager told me there is no pan or filter in the 2008 escape, only a screen.

It will depend on the model of Transmission. Most common for this a bad "Shift position sensor switch" sometimes also called the "gear position sensor".

The transmission filter is stopped up. Change it and add some new fluid and "trans x" conditioner and hope for the beat. Otherwise you need a transmission.

Where is the shift solenoid on a 2008 escape
Well, the actual solenoids are inside of the transmission, you can see them by removing the trans pan. If it wont go into any gear however, this is not your problem. Normally even if you unplug an electric trans it will default to second gear, and still move normally in reverse. Can you feel 'detents' when you move the shifter from park, or is it really easy to move? If you feel the detents, then it sounds like an internal transmission problem to me. The pump would be my first guess.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.


There are many other possibilities.

Wont go into gears below reverse
Donna if it is a manual transmission find a mechanic and have them look at the shifting rod(s) it might be jammed if it is an automatic it will be one rod something may have come loose or you ran over and is keeping the shift lever from moving
