There are no heavy exhaust emissions although about two weeks back there was a puff of whitish smoke when I took off from a parked position (engine was running, car was in park but when I changed gears and started off there was a puff of smoke).

I also have a Hyundai Accent 2001 with about 70,0000 miles, and I had this problem. I was told to have the Valve Cover Gasket replaced. I did so and it's working fine now.I also have a Hyundai Accent 2001 with about 70,0000 miles, and I had this problem. I was told to have the Valve Cover Gasket replaced. If you're the original owner of the Accent, this item should be covered by Hyundai's 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. If you're not, then you're no longer covered. If you can't afford to have a mechanic check the engine for burning oil. I would try lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer. You can read about them here:

Have you noticed if the exhaust is coming out in a heavy gray cloud? You don't have to be leaking oil to lose oil, you could also be burning oil. If there's a problem with the piston rings, you'll get oil blow by through the piston(s).Have you noticed if the exhaust is coming out in a heavy gray cloud? The car either has to be leaking oil, or burning it out the exhaust. You should check to see if there is oil on the bottom of the engine. If clean, it can be burning oil cause rings or shot, emisssion system sucking it back through the engine, etc. Your engine should be in good condition since only 55K miles, unless it got overheated or something. Hope this is a place for you to start, Rick

1. make sure you have the correct type spark plugs installed.
2. no vacuum leaks - lose air pipes
3. Check the Oxygen sensor "upstream" - remove it and see if it is sooted (black) then replace if needed.
check oil filter could be loose.or oil drain plug loose.crank vechicle look under engine area where oil pressure sending unit and timing cover look for fast steady oil leak.if losing oil more likely oil under pressure will leak out more.if you see white blueish smoke when you first start engine could have bad valve seals.
This is a social web site, like facebook,so no prices
The only way to get a price is to have the motor at an engine shop & apart, for quote or guess at the cost of necessary repairs or a compete already rebuilt engine replacement
hyundai recommends replacing the belt every 60,000 miles or 48 mos and this is an "interference" engine which means if the belt breaks, it will cause internal engine damage. happy holidays
Check for leaks around the engine which is a sign that the seal may be faulty and needs replacement. Check also if there is oil in the coolant, that could also be a sign that an oil seal is broken.
Its 3 1/2 Quarts, but you might as well put a full 4 quarts in if it goes through that much. make sure you change the filter aswell!
dirty oil will not cause your engine to go through it any faster.
Is the oil leaking or is the engine burning it?
