Loose steering wheel 1995 caprice

I have a 1995 caprice with police package, 146,000 miles. I had the front end redone, the sway bar redone, had the steering column in the engine bay replaced and still have a loose steering wheel, There is a 3-4 inch play in the wheel. I can turn the wheel 3-4 inches before the steering column in the engine well starts to turn. This leads me to believe it is not the steering box. Any ideas/help would be great.
Thanks
Jim

The steering box is ok, the problem is you can turn the wheel without the steering column moving. so its not the box there has to be something else that is going on i woujldm think

Replace the steering box - check junkyard for one of similar model/year or ask Pep Boys to help by cross ref. your make/yr with others. Pep Boys will even install for you.

Recirculating Ball type boxes can often be tweaked to eliminate this, but it is easy to overdo it and the whole thing pops off track in a tight turn and the wheels will go wicheverway they want.

Loose nut on the wheel itself is also poss.

How do i fix my 90 model caprice from swerving

Swerving not related to driver's use of alcohol usually is caused by bad or maladjusted front end parts. Have helper turn steering wheel back and forth just a little and you look under car for parts which move well and those which don't. If you find nothing loose, check ball joints or have them checked. Also check shocks and sway bar end links.

Vibration at 70 MPH.

Warped or out-of balance brake rotor? Also keep in mind that loose rear differential trailing arms that allow the rear differential to squirm around can also cause steering wheel shake.

Steering is loose

There could be a few issues you may be dealing with, one is you could possibly have worn out lower control arm bushings, or the sway bar links could be bad, may als be a very badly worn wheel bearing. Any of these issues should be addressed as soon as possible, recommend having it looked at by a repair shop. Hope this helps
