It sounds like you have a constant 12V power supply wired to the radio instead of a switched 12V. If you've recently installed a new radio, check your wires again. There should be a 12V constant and a 12V switched. The switched 12V will turn the radio off, while the constant 12V is for keeping the clock and radio memory working.

Is this the factory radio? It seems it is loosing power when the car is shut off. A car radio usually has two wires for power.... one that retains memory (usually yellow) and one that is tied into the cars ignition switch (normally red). You would need to track down the fuse or connection for the constant 12v power that the memory wire is connected to.

you should get a wiring harness to save you the trouble, however i just put in a kenwood in a 1997 thunderbird, if you cut the black wiring cover all the speaker wires are wrapped together and the other wires will be 12v constant acc, ground, etc. here is a diagram Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Green/Yellow

Apparently on my 93 buick lesabre. It's located on the passager side just behind the front tire. Where the fuel lines go up ti the engine.

use a volt meter while the car is running to check the main wire or large red wire coming off the back of the alternator it should read a steady 14 volts, the volt meter must be set at dc 10 amp settings, ground the black wire to ground or a metal surface some where on the car and touch the red probe wire on the volt meter to the main terminal of the alternator as i said it should read a constant 14 volts if it doesn't the alternator is bad.

I'm trying to fix another problem on my lesabre and I saw your question here. I don't know when or if you even will need or read my answer, but I've changed the water pump before on my '93. It's not as impossible as you might think. I'm NOT that mechanically inclined. I'd be happy to describe it in detail if you are interested.
