1994 Jeep Cherokee ignition problem

I have been having trouble with this jeep for some time now. It will usually crank and run fine for 30-45 minutes and then without warning it shuts off, doesnt sputter or act like it is starving for fuel it just shuts off. Also if you drive it for 30 minutes or so and turn it off it will not crank again for about an hour or two. This leads me to believe it is an ignition problem and that something is getting mixed up after the engine gets hot. I think it is ignition since when it does die it is very sudden, not with spitting or sputtering like it is out of fuel, so I immagine it is probably not getting any fire for some reason. This is a 4.0 liter engine. Any suggestions?

Might check the crank sensor. it is located on the transmission bellhousing on top just off to the drivers side. if the pcm loses this signal the vehicle will die immediately and not restart until it sees the signal again

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0. Got fuel, got spark but won't start!

Question edited for clarity. Cranking IS turning over. You are cranking but not firing, or starting, or running.

If you haven't much pressure at the rail, your likely problem is not enough fuel pressure and the fuel pump needs replacing. One post here says you need 39 PSI and another says 49 PSI. What do you have? You need to test with a pressure gauge.

I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee and it always starts up, but sometimes it just shuts off randomly while I'm driving and after a few minutes of rest turns back on, the battery will still be worki

Install a new crank shaft sensor. I had the same problem with my wife's Jeep. It would run fine fore days at a time then quit. When the crank sensor goes out their is no spark or injection of fuel into the engine. This is a Hall Sensor. They can be intermittent, and affected bu heat. If your Jeep will not start, try freeing the sensor and see if it starts. Cold Freeze is used in electronics to test

My 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.2L is very difficult to start if it has not been run in the previous 6 hours. Replaced ignition coil but didn't solve the problem. After sitting overnight it

Low fuel pressure.
You need to check the fuel pressure on the first crank and watch it as it is running.
Requires a special gauge.
If it were just a starting problem I would say it could be a pump relay, but not if it runs rough for 5 min.
Might be a dirty filter or problem in the tank.

You changed the ignition coil from distributor right?
secondly make sure distributor is not internally shattered (which is a common problem). Normally the current comes from Crank sensor or cam shaft sensor !

94 Jeep Cherokee won't start

I believe the green wire is a pulse from the distributor and its a ground signal. I could be wrong since is been a while since i left the jeep dealer...I would take the coil out (2 bolts on most) and take it to autozone. They can test it in minutes for free. Either that or the ignition module but more common is coil.
