Bad gas mileage from O2 senor being bad, EGR sensor bad or needs cleaning

Well, where to start with this car... Its an automatic. When I'm at a stop light the car starts to jump and cuts off for a second then turns back on. Sometimes the car cuts off when I back up. It gets from 9 mpg to 35. Sometimes it has a hard time shifting from 3rd gear to 4th. It has a hard time going up hills. The check engine light is on and got it checked; says the oxygen sensor is bad, EGR sensor is bad, and 4 cylinder misfires or something like that. I changed the spark plugs and that didn't change the misfires. Haven't replaced the oxygen sensor or EGR sensor yet because they are too expensive, I would like to know where these parts are located and how to clean the EGR sensor and oxygen sensor. Also, what could be causing the misfires. I am so aggravated with this car and just want to blow it up.

How to Increase gas mileage?
http://schematicsdiagram.blogspot.com/2011/12/how-to-increase-gas-mileage-on-2011.html---------

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

GEAR SHIFT ISSUES

http://alltypesofpartsreplacing.blogspot.com/2012/11/gear-shift-issues.html

==========

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

From start to end troubleshooting these problems I suggest you to check the help link below and follow its procedure: -----

Mostly all types of car no start problems are discussed here with solutions.

ENGINE MISFIRE

There are few possibilities that can cause engine misfire issues. It can be issue with spark plugs or faulty spark plugs. Also get the compression test done for cylinders. If any of cylinder shows low compression then required, then that particular cylinder will cause misfire.

Also get obd codes scanned, the error code will let you know which cylinder is misfiring or all cylinders are misfiring.

For your trouble shooting I suggest you to refer the help oinks below. It has step by step details for many engine misfire issues.

Do you know exactly where the oxygen and EGR sensor is at? Also, could you tell me how to clean them?

I suggest to get a grasp on reality & go to a
repair shop that has been at the same location
for 25 years & have all the issues properly diagnosed
& resolved

You don't have the knowledge to do so yourself
or you wouldn't be here

  • Anonymous Dec 06, 2012

Thank you for the smartass post. I have taken it to a couple shops and they can't figure it out.

  • Anonymous Dec 06, 2012

Think about what you just said You went to a couple of shop that couldn't figure it out. Is that acceptable & what a repair shop should charge you for. I said go to a shop that has been around along time & knows how to resolve you issues. I'm not the problem the car is & your ability to find a shop with experienced people. There are reasons why shops don't resolve things, that I won't share with you

SOURCE: Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally 2003 hesitates while driving

before anything i had the problem and this is the way i solved it ... the lancer has 2 ignition coils in 2 cylinders what you do is take the iginition coil out of the cylinder that is misfiring and change it to another cylinder and put the car on the odb reader again it should change location of misfire .. then that would tell you that its the ignition coil thats bad i ended up getting my coil at the dealer for $110 ebay has some aftermarket pairs for $100 so you can get 2 now for the price i paid for 1 that will solve the problem guaranteed owne d a lancer for 5 years know the ups and downs to them

My wife has a disco3 tdv6 hse 2007 with just 74000 miles The egr light remains on after starting All else ok and performance not affected Does little mileage with no motorway Can I rest and how?

yes you can reset by disconnecting battery cable for 10 secound, but you might want to check the vacuum and sensor for egr valve not much can go wrong with it. if the o2 senor goes bad before now it may have carbon build up . pull out and clean with tooth brush. 86 cent gasket. EGR sensor adjust fuel use, there before your gas milage will get better.

You can manually test the egr valve by pushing up from underneath it and seeing if the spring loaded valve moves and re seats itself. If no, it's bad.

yes it will. Also the EGR system may have a problem now too. When a o2 sensor goes bad it can destroy the egr valve and the map sensor too

It sounds like you have two bad oxygen sensors. There is likely one before and one after the catalytic converter. 120K is about time for new O2 sensors anyway.

04 Pontiac Vibe bad gas mileage without a code and then the p0420

that code is from having the plugs wires reversed as you did and the o2 senors regrsitered the overload on gas emmions once you remove the battery cables for about 5 minutes and then recconect and run the engine it should be okay

I had the GDI done but still not running properly. splutters, shurges and has a high gas consumption not running too bad on v power

I give a look towards the O2 sensor. When an O2 senor fails the ECU will run the engine rich (better to to this then run lean and burn up valves, in running rich the gas mileage goes bad quick) This condition sounds familiar for O2 sensor failiar.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Ford has problems with the DPFE sensors that has to do with the EGR. its just a code that points you in the direction of the problem. you could have a bad DPFE or egr or just a simple clogged hose. there should be 2 hoses on these f150s the only way to tell is by checking hoses otherwise you need more tools to check these things. a vacuum test on the DPFE sensor to see if it reacts.

the other code is an O2 sensor code. heater problem. could be different problems or a bad O2 can cause a rich condition cause low fuel mileage and also cause the EGR system to clogg over time.
I dont knwo what else to help you with because its one of those things that just needs to be looked at in person. your best bet is check the DPFE hoses. should be near EGR and look for rubber hoses connecter to a sensor. should have 2 hoses connected to it. Google a pic of one so you knwo what they look like.
Good luck
