It should start i N. So try to start in N then put it in D and see if it dies. If it still dies, then do an upper intake manifold cleaning including the mass air flow sensor.

Just to give an update on my car - I've been having an issue with the car stalling when moving from Park into Reverse or Drive (I have automatic). ... I have been playing with the idle advance trying to get more ... I put in the remainder of the AT fluid I had on hand and the car never died on shifting after that.

another case of probable dirty throttle body. those 4.0 liters get real dirty in the throttle body. take off the air tube and spray carb cleaner down the bore and squirt that smaller hole the dtepper motor is in. get your tooth brush and open throttle by hand scrub away all that black goo in the bore and on the plat rinse with more spray untill sparkling. put together start. it will spuuter a bit cause of cleaner,
have your neutral safety switch checked or adjusted. if engine dies as soon as it is shifted to reverse, does it so the same when you shift it to drive? if on reverse only, idle is set too low.
