It sounds as though you have some kind of problem going on in the engine. Does the engine run rough? What is the code for the check engine light? You can get it checked at AutoZone. Could be a bad/bent valve, cam timing off. I am thinking the check engine light is on because of an engine misfire. Please rate my answer so I get points for it.

Hear a tapping sound after start up. saw a electronic throttle light come on and go back out. after driving a bit it stops but when start up it does it again

could be a problem hydraulic cam follower that is bleeding down too fast and dropping off oil pressure
If the mileage is up on the engine a bleed down test of all hydraulic followers would be in order
If you have had a oil change recently, check the quality of the oil filter used as el-cheapo filters do not have a check valve incorporated and when the engine is shut down all of the oil that is normally held in the oil passages is allowed to drain back to the sump
In the normal process the bearings get oil first and the rocker gear last so the tapping could be a delay to build up oil pressure that operates the hydraulic followers

CHeck engine AND VSA light came on in my car 2003 Highlander

Hello, and welcome to FixYa. Without knowing the actual 'code' (the reason for the light being on), it is hard to state with any accuracy.

However...we see quite a bit, here in my shop, Highlanders with the Check Engine light on, right after an oil change. Often, whoever changes the oil sometimes checks the air filter, and, when they open the filter box, they knock off a vacuum hose going to the air filter box. This could be your problem.

Go out to the vehicle, pop the hood, and check the black box that holds the air filter, on the passenger side front of the engine compartment; look to see if a black rubber hose is not connected. If it is off, reconnect it and drive the vehicle 10 miles, shut it off, and drive another 10 miles. This may extinguish the light.

I hope that this info helps you out. Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

I have a 1991 toyota 4runner V6 4wd. Lately driving my toyota 4runner around its been kinda guttless and its getting horrible gas mileage, like below 8 mpg! this is not good, my truck is running kindof...

Have you tried changing both of the fuel filters? If they are clogged your power will go down and your gas mileage will go down. I'm not sure about the smell of gas, but new fuel filters really helped mine.

2005 Prius change in MPG after dealer service

What was the weight of the oil that was put into the engine when it was changed? Prius engines are VERY PICKY about the proper weight of the engine oil. Trust me. I see this quite often. The wrong weight oil can do bizzare things, and def lower your mileage. Something you can check: Take off the tube leading to the throttle body, and look down into the intake. Do you see any oil laying in the intake manifold? If so, you DEF have the wrong weight oil. This will NOT set a Check Engine light, either. Hope this helps.
