Ignition key does not turn

I drive my Elantra 2007 all morning with no problems. I parked for a couple of hours and when I try to start it again the key did not turned at all. I the two original keys that come with my vehicle. The shifting stick is in park and can't be moved from this position. Suggestion are welcome....Thanks

I am having the same problem, but it is not the steering wheel lock. It has happened twice. First time the steering was locked, but today it was not. Do think I should try graphit or wd40? Or is the ignition worn out?

Have you tried wiggling the steering wheel?

while trying to turn the key, try to wiggle the steering wheel. sometimes, the lock to the steering wheel is preventing the key to turn.

tnx 4 using fixya,

well the last resort would be to remove the plastic cover of the steering column and unscrew the white plastic where the wires are attached . unscrew it in the end of the key cylinder.
you can notice that you can use a spade screw driver to turn the inside of the white plastic and you can start the car but the problem is still your steering column which is still locked.

the lock of your steering column is being fasten by a special bolt that is why it would be very hard to remove.

if you can un lock your steering, then you can use the car and bring it to a repair shop.

    tnx again

problem is caused by ignition timing. your ignition timing is overly advanced.

have a mechanic check your ignition timing. adjustments in timing are done in distributor, camshaft pulley, and crackshaft pulley.

I put key in ignition this morning and the key would not turn. What do I do to fix problem? Steering wheel is not locked, battery is not dead

A couple of guesses so if it fails you'll have to post the problem again.

1) Is there a button to release the ignition lock, sometimes on the underneath of the steering column?
2) Assuming no or you've already tried that, sometimes, if when parked, the steering wheel is turned slightly, the steering lock and the ignition lock bind. Just try rocking the steering wheel left and right, no more than 8th of a turn, while trying to turn the ignition key. May just work.

A few hours ago I turned the ignition key to the position that allowed me to remove a CD from the radio, and I must have left the key in that position. Now it seems like the battery has drained down to...

that is strange that the key will not release -- there is nothing electrical about the key being held in place. I would recommend trying to move the steering wheel back and forth as you try and turn the key/ignition back and forth and then back to off and try and get the key out then. if this does not do it then it sounds like something has gone wrong in the ignition switch itself and I would recommend jump starting the car and driving it down to your local automotive locksmith and see if they can get the key to release. the ignition might need to be re-pined and a locksmith can do this for you and get your key working good again.
hope it all works out,

2007 Chevy Trailblazer won't start

the ignition switch is a very common problem with these vehicles. when the problem is occuring check the pink wire coming off the ignition switch and see if there is power. the computer controls the starter on this vehicle and if there is insuficient voltage going to the ecu it will not power up.
