They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Same thing happened to my Panasonic Lumix. I completely stripped down the camera to see if I could find the offending bit of dust or dirt that everyone online says is the problem. No chance. I tried all the tricks, including banging the camera quite hard on my kitchen table (I was quite frustrated by that point!)
I've narrowed it down to a small motor that controls the lens and consequently the focus part. But you simply can't buy the parts. A professional repair quoted more than the camera was worth so I sold it on ebay for 'spares or repair' and bought a new one.
The 'lens error' problem plagues all of these compact zoom cameras, so unfortunately it's a very common fault and expensive to repair.

There is something wrong with your lens barrel. It can be anything from some sand/dirt that got inside in which you try using some canned air to blow out the particles while continually turning it on and off. Usually what it is from is the camera being dropped, even if it is in a case or inside a bad. The jostle or direct impact of the fall will break some small gears or tweak the lens off of alignment. If it was from an impact then you lens barrel needs to be replaced and in that case the repair cost are usually as much as getting a new camera. You can send it into Canon and get it repair for a flat rate. Sorry about your camera.

if your lens looks bad like crooked, then you have to send to canon. They don't sell lens unit to local repair shop. but not serious problem (lens repairable) then bring to local repair shop. canon will charge you about $135, local repair shop would charge you $65

You could try you local electrical or photo retailer but I'd get a quote first. I don't intend to be rude but its likely the repair could cost more than the camera is worth.

I'm tempted to tell you to send the camera to me in Canada for repair. Just the difference in exchange will save you money. LOL
I siggest you check the phone book in your area for a shop that is authorized by Canon. They will have the equipment and software to do a proper repair. By dealing directly with the shop you may be able to negotiate a better price.
