Microwave is not working

Our microwave is one year old and it sudenly stopped working. The light is on and the time clicks but the food does not get heated and the rotating glass top also does not rotate anymore. Can you tell me what could be wrong with this microwave.

Thanks!

I am facing the same problem. Can i fix it by myself??

  • kellinevius Aug 24, 2008

The light comes on, everything works, but the table doesn't turn and it does heat up. I'm so glad I came to this sight I read what the problem might be. ( The door not latching properly), and that is what it is. I turned on the microwave and held the handle while moving it a little up and down, and it WORKED !!!! Now how do I fix it????

    Thank you !!!

We've had this problem with our 2 year old microwave, too. Twice we've had it fixed by repairmen (we're not handy, especially with electricity). If it goes out when I first put something in it, I can jiggle the handle and it will start right up. But when it dies in the middle of cooking (like it did recently) the handle trick doesn't work. Adding another repair cost to what we've already put in to it, plus the very real possibility the problem will happen again, it will probably cost less to just replace it--even though I expect a microwave to last more than 2 years.

Yes. This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or occasionally a misaligned door hinge.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

Buzzing sound... Turntable stopped. food heats up but uneven. No microwave fan when heating.. no light inside expensive fix?? Unit is 10 years old

If the microwave oven is 10 years old then it is time to consider a new unit, by your description it is going into cascade failure where different parts have stopped working, the buzzing sound is the magnetron warning you, it is about to fail. The fans job is to keep the magnetron cool while it is running.

If it's less than one year old, it would be fully covered under warranty and you should contact the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

Some have longer warranties, and that will be covered in your owner's manual.

if everything works except the heating, it is most likely the mag tube is on its way out.........that is the most common reason for it not too cook.......since the microwave is a GE and it is 3.5 years old, i would say you are better off buying a new microwave, the mag tube starts at around $70.00 and up + the labor it costs too have a service person put it in........around another $60.00

IT COULD BE A NUMBER OF THINGS RANGING FROM DIODES TO CAPACITORS TO YOUR MAGNATRON OR THERMOSTAST OR TRANSFORMERS. IT'S DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE WITHOUT SEEING THIS MICROWAVE. YOU MAY BE BETTER OFF GETTING YOURSELF A DIFFERENT ONE.

Microwave makes loud noise and does not heat. Smell of light burning

Chances are you have a bad magnetron.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Microwave makes loud noise and does not heat. Smell of light burning

The noise is coming from the high-voltage transformer being overloaded by something shorting it out. Either the magnatron or the high-voltage capacitor and diode. Replace the capacitor and diode then if still not working, replace the magnatron. Its only affordable if you do it yourself - buy the part on EBAY - lookup "universal magnatron"
Hope ya fix it!
