I have GE JVM2050 over the range microwave, which stopped heating food and water since this morning. It is 3.5 years old. All other functions including light, key pad, clock, turntable work normal. The magnetron sound also appears fine except at the very start - when it seems little louder. I turned the power off hoping it will rest - but no luck. Thanks
If everything works except the heating, it is most likely the mag tube is on its way out.........that is the most common reason for it not too cook.......since the microwave is a GE and it is 3.5 years old, i would say you are better off buying a new microwave, the mag tube starts at around $70.00 and up + the labor it costs too have a service person put it in........around another $60.00

If everything else works on the microwave, but it simply does not heat, the magnetron is a logical guess. There are also three other components that make up the High Voltage network: HV transformer, HV Capacitor and HV Diode. The magnetron, however usually is the component that fails more commonly. If the model number you have this listed under is correct, you can view all these components at appliancepartspros.com. Just type in your model number and look under the "Cavity" section. The magnetron runs around $86. If you decide to repair this, please let me know. A microwave oven is not an appliance for a DIY beginner to start with. The High Voltage network has potentials of 3000 to 4000 volts and safety is important. If this is not your model number, post back with the correct info. I hope this helps you.

While it's possible it could be a door switch or mount, it's most likely a bad magnetron or a bad connection at the magnetron or on the control board. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can order parts for Samsung models here: http://www.samsungparts.com/search/search.asp

Not the magnetron if intermittent. Probably a bad smartboard. Easy to replace if you know the basic precautions to take.
I'm guessing that your internal cooling fan is also not working when you try to microwave?
Chances are you have a bad secondary interlock (bottom door switch) or its mount is broken, loose or misaligned.

Is mag tube same as magnetron? The magnetron has 10-year parts warranty.
With $60 labor, it may still be cheaper to get the magnetron part replaced than to replace the microwave (new mwave will have additional delivery and installation costs).
Also, is there a way for an average Joe to determine if the magnetron is bad?
