The inverter board is most likely the problem, often caused by bad capacitors that sometimes puff at the top, indicating it is open. The inverter can be repaired, or the board must be replaced so long as the monitor is not to old each manufacture is different in their policy making.

Yes, it confirmed my thoughts, I have already swapped six capacitors that had started to bulge, but it made no difference, so I am thinking that either some of the other capacitors are failing without showing any signs, or the failure of the replaced capacitors caused another component to fail.
I'm no electronic engineer, but handy with a soldering iron, so replacing a few capacitors is about my limit.
