The Dryer is 15 years old . . . whirlpool dryer serial number MD1912702. Last night it was running, drying a load of laundry. It stopped. Now it will not start. the timer works. The power source works. I pressed the start button and nothing happens. How can I find the problem and possibly fix it my self? My wife wants to call a service repair person. Will the service call be worth it or should we think of purchasing a new one?

Do not think yet of purchasing new dryer nor calling a service person as this may be a simple problem and you can fix it yourself. You may only need to replace some components as this type of problem is usually caused by a blown thermal fuse which is wired in series with the motor. When it blows, power to the motor is terminated causing the motor not to run. No dryer function works then when the motor cannot run.

The thermal fuse is located on the blower housing along with the cycling thermostat. Disconnect power then access and bypass the thermal fuse. The blower housing is located on the front left bottom of the dryer cabinet for the dryers with lint filter on the front or at the rear left bottom if the lint filter is located on the top of the cabinet.

Bypass the thermal fuse by disconnecting the wires and connecting them together. Insulate the connection properly and plug the dryer back in. The thermal fuse is indeed blown and needs to be replaced including the cycling thermostat if the dryer starts. NEVER use the dryer with the thermal fuse bypassed due to fire hazards. The thermal fuse and the cycling thermostat costs about $35.

Let us know if the problem is not addressed above or if you need further advice but indicate the exact model number of the machine for further advice.

How old is the ghw9100lw1 washer and the gew9200lw1 dryer

The manufactured date is deterimed by the SERIAL NUMBER on these appliances. The following link explains how to determine the age of Whirlpool manufactured appliances:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r2880489-determining_age_whirlpool_appliance

The first two NUMBERS of the serial number determines the week it was manufactured. The last digit before the numbers, determines the year. If you still have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: The serial number criteria is for all appliances manufactured by Whirlpool. Your washer and dryer will use the same format.

Whirlpool electric dryer not drying

If the drier drum is still turning I would suspect a separate fuse is open for the heating element. Checking this may require openning the back cover. It may also be a defective or open heating element.
