I posted very closely related troubleshooting steps to take in order to prevent your CAM from performing badly. Check your CAM batteries to ensure they are using only approved NIKON batteries as anything else will cause you lots of errors and potential problems. When you using the timer or remote options, remember these are controlled by battery as well, radio frequency, and radio wave lengths. When you press the button to take a photo, inspect the button, press firmly for a second and release. If your button is not performing the way it should, inspect it to see if any wear and tear is visible to you. Check free deprey around the button such as DUST, HAIR BUILDUP, and small particals that are hardly visible to the human eye. With very low velocity pressure air, blow around the shoot button as build up will cause the same error your experiencing. I SUSPECT THE NEWER CARD IS NOT COMPATIBLE AS THE OLDER CARD IS

It's a lost cause. The A540 works with SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work in devices not designed for them. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common cause is having the tiny slide switch on the side of the card in the wrong position. The second most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. There are also other common causes if the above didn't help, with troubleshooting steps for this problem listed here.

Can't help with the camera- sounds like it has a fault.

The photos, however, should be recoverable by putting the memory card into a card reader on a computer.

Memory card locked, already tried little switch on the side

It may have to be unlocked in the camera settings. My phone has a lock feature for photos, to prevent accidenta erasing.

Memory card error message

Cards are coming in different formats and it might be possible that you brought a card which is not suitable or functional with your camera. The other reason could be that we are having options to lock our memory card in digital camera and you might have taken out your earlier card without unlocking it. The system might be broken from inside and this could be a reason that you are still getting a message that memory card is locked. It seems possible based on problem you are sharing.

Card Locked ! Error

Remove SD card, then whilst card is removed, delete all pictures that may still be stored in cameras 'internal' memory (usually just a few) then replace SD card. Should be unlocked now?.

Card lock

Dear geogie:

If your camera gives you "card locked" error messages with several cards and you KNOW that the cards are indeed not locked via the sliding lock mechanism, then your camera needs to be sent in for service as it has developed and electrical communications problem within the memory card control function.

I would first however try a hard reset by resetting your camera to the default settings, removing the battery and memory card for two minutes, and then replacing them. Retest the cards for the error message. If it still occurs then call 1-800-828-8080 for your options.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
